Agreed. I've been trying to figure out what to give my son as a first computer. This would be a neat option. If he wants to watch videos on youtube, he is going to have to code himself a browser first.

<Theory X> is a post hoc explanation for how <Subject Y> works. It's not like somebody came up with the theory of how <Subject Y> should work and then built one, like you would a computer. General relativity is a post

Try reading AntiFragile. You will be very sick of that word by the time you finish the book.

Rt is based on the rate of change, not the absolute value, right? So if testing coverage is constant in time, then doesn’t it drop out? Of course, it isn’t constant with time, but it is also probably not changing that drastically over short

Since this is hacker news, where is the Girardian analysis? This situation seems to call for it with the fear of outsiders and scapegoating. Hard to worry about mimetic contagion when there is a real contagion?

For most of the people in the world, Internet is already available through land lines or cellular service. OneWeb has very little ability to extract monopoly rents from them. But both sides are not relevant to the article - whether the busi

If you want to argue about Trump, please find someone else to do it with (or somewhere else to do it). My comment was not about Trump's response, and I regret even including mention of him, since that one offhand comment has generated

I wonder how much of it is just playing the odds. Shutting everything down will very likely have a large, but fixed consequence on the economy, which has huge cost, including in lives and health. Whereas biding your time increases the relat

I’m genuinely curious why he thinks a wartime leader needs to yell all the time, whereas a peacetime leader doesn’t. I would think that yelling is either effective, or not effective, in producing outcomes and that should be true regardless

You are payed well to do X. You can’t get anyone to pay you to do Y. Yet you believe that Y is more valuable to society than X. Why? Isn’t society’s willingness to pay you for something a decent signal that society values it?

Eh, it’s all semantics. What you are calling meta has been called strategy for thousands of years. No big deal - words change. I’ll get used to it.

That’s exactly my point. Nobody calls a peloton meta racing. A peloton is just strategy. Always has been.

Okay. It’s outside my area of expertise, so maybe I didn’t pick the best example. The internet seems to imply that there is a lot of debate as to what is meta programming.

I can think of two definitions: 1) a higher level of abstraction. For example, creating a class is programming. Creating a class factory (a class that creates classes) is meta programming. 2) self referential. The movie Adaption is meta, be
