As I mentioned yesterday - I recently needed to process hundreds of low quality images of invoices (for a construction project). I had a script that had used pil/opencv, pytesseract, and open ai as a fallback. It still has a staggering

I get that when drama unfolds like this there is going to be a shake out. It's always valuable, to some degree, to know what happened and why. I just wish we could get to the part where the community can know and trust that our supply

I just ran Qwen against some of invoices that my gnarly algorithm really struggled with (with openai fallback) and Qwen was able to extract all relevant data without any issues. I'm pretty damn impressed to be honest.

I did it the old school way with openai as the fallback. All I'm saying is I'm excited to try Qwen to see if it out performs my gnarly algorithm.

I recently needed to scan hundreds of low quality invoices and run them through OCR for invoice numbers and dates. I really took for granted how seamless this is in some applications, and was shocked how much work went into producing decent

Their comment about Canada's trade prospects are very telling. They are trying to spin a false narrative (surprise surprise).

As a Canadian, living shoulder to shoulder with the very folks who used to frequently travel to the US (and being one myself). I firmly disagree.

Yea, trying to bring Tobi into this by proxy of Kaz is a stretch. If they want to talk about Kaz, talk about Kaz.

The fact you're being questioned about this is insane. There used to be a 0% chance of being tossed on a plane and deported somewhere else in the world when visiting the US. That chance is now non-zero, which is an unacceptable level o

I obviously don't know you, so take my last paragraph with a grain of salt. All I can do is relate what you wrote and my interpretation of it with my knowledge and experience. Although, I don't make comment about whether you'

Yea, this is a great one. I've had a lot of success in the past using the backpack problem / box packing as an interview question for problem solving / pair programming parts of the interview. It has "I don't know&q

The book referenced is not wrong, but it is too narrow. Repair isn't the core attribute of parenting. It's the core attribute of human relationships. This is generally accepted as common knowledge - it's not about the rupture

AI is really good at writing tests. AI is also pretty good if you get it to do small chunks of code for you. This means you come with the architecture, the implementation details, and how each piece is structured. When I walk AI through eac

Love all the work Jean Boussier does for the ecosystem. I would add to this commentary that there are a number of things you can do in Rails to speed it up. For instance, ActionController::Metal

Your comment implies people who build companies with the intent to sell don't build companies that deliver value. That couldn't be further from the truth. There is nothing wrong with wanting to build something of value and don

Oh, I remember you (for your ping, not your gamertag lol). For real, though. After years of playing CS the WC3 plugin revived the game for me. De aztec was amazing when you could teleport all around the map.

This is true with any any interaction with the DB, ORM or otherwise. Regardless of the layer of abstraction you choose to operate at you still need to understand the underlying complexity. What Rails gives you is easy to use (and understand

If your ORM is going to the DB per row you're using it wrong. N+1 queries are a performance killer. They are easy to spot in any modern APM. Rails makes this easy to avoid. Using `find_each` batches the queries (by 1,000 records at a t

I've worked both with ORMs and without. As a general rule, if the ORM is telling you there is something wrong with your query / tables it is probably right. The only time I've seen this is my career was a project that was an

I used the one he put together for Ubuntu. My setup had become old and clunky. My dotfiles had become a mass. It was nice to go from 0 to something useful without effort. Now I just make changes as I see fit.

I don't think people in CS should be giving broad overly simplistic mental health advice. Let's leave that to the pros. I'm grateful of DHH's contributions to society but his hot takes are marketing ploys. Mental health

I'm in the same boat - and if they came to me and said "If you can, an extra $20 would really go a long way", I'd probably give them another $20.
