Right? It's asking for trouble. I was in the repebble comments a few days ago and this person rolled their own for very obvious reasons: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47078454

Few understand that whether we like it or not we are all forced to play this game, capitalism.

I too am very excited. I had a voice recorder laying around and have worked that into my workflow over the past few months. Although, my AI assistant is a cobbled together set of python scripts. What are you using for your AI assistant?

That one made me lol. This same conversation happened a little while ago. Both powerpoint and excel are well ahead of the competition.

Yes - the author's observations are not wrong. Companies, on paper, are logical. However, as one professor told us in college "All companies are perfect until you introduce the humans". Humans are messy. Humans work outside o

(not an expert) I see this with Cursor all the time with tools. Cursor will stop editing files in the editor and use the command line to echo edits into a file. It's so frustrating.

Reminds me of a project on here a while ago where the author had used NFC tags and home assistant to give his kids a digital library with little tap cards.

Somewhat true - I usually find that in these languages the patterns are there they are just less obvious.

I agree that Word has a million replacements. Hell, I usually just roll with a markdown file. But nothing beats excel or power point.

Oh friend, if only you knew. Not only that, software nerds are rediscovering that they can build so much in Excel. You don't need an app for everything.

Or power point. I had to make some slides for the first time in a decade. I was in Google Slides for 5 minutes, then I tried to import an SVG. That was the moment I booted into windows for the first time in 4 months. I started up Power Poin

There was a post on here recently about how you should build your own agent, and I completely agree. I'd say most competent developers should be building even more complex projects than an agent. Once you do you quickly realize how it&

My use case is pretty specific - I have a 6 week old baby. So, I've been walking on my walking pad with her in the carrier. Typing in that situation is really not pleasant for anyone, especially the baby. Speed isn't my concern, I

I've been building tools for stuff I don't want to do. Any task where I need to take some amount of data, structured or unstructured, and need a specific outcome is perfect. That way I can spend more time on the thing I do want to

The new Qwen model is supposed to be very good. Honestly, I've gotten really far simply by transcribing audio with whisper, having a cheap model clean up the output to make it make sense (especially in a coding context), and copying th

The technical capacity of a CTO matters less then the CTOs ability to stay in their lane (for a lack of a better term). I once worked for a company with a self taught CTO (and not the good kind). They had a number of star players, and this

It's not really about SEC filings, though. While we folks on HN would never think of hard copies of invoices, but much of the world still operates this way. As mentioned above I have about 200 construction invoices. They are all format

I had mentioned this when the new QWEN model dropped - I have a stack of construction invoices that fail through both OCR and OpenAI. It's a hard (and very interesting) problem space.

Tbh, I had run the images through a few filters. The images that went through to AI were high contrast, black and white, with noise such as highlighters removed. I had tried 1 shot and few shot. I think it was largely a formatting issue. Li

What's the cost of the fine-tuned model? If you were attempting to optimize for cost, would it be worth it to detect scan layouts to get better OCR? Honestly, I'm such a noob in this space. I had 1 project I needed to do, didn

My dataset could be described in a similar way. Very low quality, very odd layouts, information density where it's completely unnecessary. And these contractors were relatively good operators compared to most.

It did not, unfortunately. When CV failed gpt-4o failed as well. I even had a list of valid invoice numbers & dates to help the models. Still, most failed. Construction invoices are not great.

With Qwen I went as stupid as I could: please provide the bounding box metadata for pytesseract for the above image. And it spat it out.
