top would be good to have as a GUI, but I think 99% of people would prefer not to have X11 running on their servers, not least because of how insecure it is. Also, a surprising amount of TUI apps do have at least some mouse support. Sure, i

Using the terminal at least makes you proficient with the lowest common denominator of tools. I know I can SSH into any random machine, and edit a config with the copy of vi/vim it has, even if it doesn't have my fancy plugins. An

Why not just use an actual 2.5" SSD instead of a bunch of SD cards in a terrible quality adapter? At least with the SSD, you only have one microcontroller doing god-knows-what to hide the horrific reality of flash storage, vs 10 SD car

I don't doubt that sun exposure is a contributing factor to skin cancer, but it just does not make sense that skin cancer rates have shot up over the past 100 years, while at the same time people spend less and less time outside. IMO,

To be fair, the Arduino IDE is java swing, so it doesn't look quite right on any platform.

There was a sort of golden infancy period for podcasts, where if you had a iPod you could fit a ton of them on the spinning drive.

I have fond memories when I was a teenager, loading my 80gb iPod video full of podcasts I could listen to on trips. The reason I even got into podcasts back then, was I didn't have any money to buy CDs or mp3s, but I could download as

IMO we should celebrate that podcasts have managed to remain an open standard for so long. All of the open standards we have, are basically a historical accident: HTTP, SMTP, etc. It's really easy for open standards to be killed by big

Segregated bike paths, at some point, have to intersect with roads and driveways. So you can never eliminate the risk of accidents. I can’t find any hard data on this, but from what I can see online (and my own experience riding in the road

Also, the term jaywalking itself was invented by car companies to absolve drivers of the deaths they cause.

    by rhinoceraptor 8y ago

Also, a lot of the existing bike infrastructure is just awful. They put bike lanes next to parked cars, paint sharrows instead of building real bike lanes, and pedestrian islands on roads with no bike lane, that make passing cyclists safely

It's pretty obvious what you do if a field in a JSON object is optional, you use an optional type. Any good statically typed language has that.

Yes, I'm talking about coordinating PRs against multiple repos. Obviously, this isn't a git feature, this is something that Github would need to do, just like issues/webhooks/comments are not git features. This is one of

It would also be nice to have a way to link multiple PRs together so they can be merged simultaneously. A ton of people are working across multiple repos which makes reviewing and coordinating changes really annoying.

There are a ton of apps that are "expensive", but worth it. Omnifocus, Overcast, Soulver, 1Password, Blink, Working Copy, Coda, Procreate, LumaFusion, Affinity Photo, etc. People spend upwards of $1000 on a phone, but are unwillin

I think there's just not really a way for high quality, user facing applications to be open source. And when you download free of charge proprietary apps, more often than not you're giving up your data/privacy as compensation

I'm not sure what the mental block is for people. A $5 app is considered premium, and that's what plenty of people spend on coffee on their way to work every day.

I do mind them promoting their app, it’s a horrible app and they’ve continually ruined their website. The only way I can stand to use reddit anymore is through Narwhal, at least until they kill their 3rd party apps API.

I think the problem is visual systems make it harder to create your own abstractions. You can't have all the complexity exposed in a single level, you need to be able to hide details at a lower level. For example, each module in an aud

If you're just going to show a video, why not skip the whole presentation and just make a video? The whole point of a presentation is to be able to read the room, slow down or clarify points, and to respond to feedback in real time.
