My only interaction with Adafruit has been their documentation and their firmware stuff (that I can recommend). They have a gift guide for young engineers. https://www.adafruit.com/explore/adafruit-gift-guide-young-e...

Sortof? I think keyboards on smartphones are an example: they tend to resemble regular, physical desktop keyboards, rather than just a grid of letters. It seems like that's the main reason for the 'A' to be offset from the &#

Sending email notifications to 400,000 users for unimportant things is antisocial. (If 0.1% of those users then reply on the thread, it'd be another 400 comments sent to all 400,000 recipients). I don't think anyone sits down and

Maybe it'd be neat.. but, I think sometimes "the map is not the territory" goes both ways. - I probably want a diagram to be simpler than the actual system. With a manually constructed diagram, I have leverage to handwave irr

Pretty much. You'd use Direnv to support this UX. https://direnv.net/ I think the nice thing about project-specific tooling like this is it allows getting started with the project very easily. (Rather than copy-pasting

Yes. I think it's a good way to get started with Nix. e.g. with nix installed, you'll be able to use the nix-shell to get the development dependencies without having to install system wide, if a shell.nix or flake.nix has been wri

I'd describe nix as "programmatic package management". Nix is a difficult tool to learn, but very powerful. A lot of nice UX use cases with Nix could perhaps be described as "like Docker, without the containers". In

If you have only one Yubikey, and use it as the only factor of authentication to a website, you'll need to ensure you store the 2FA recovery codes safely. Whereas, if you have both Yubikey and TOTP as factors of authentication, if you

Sure, but Nix is very weird, and takes quite a different approach compared to other things. Understanding Linux is both necessary, but not sufficient. But comparing Arch an NixOS: - Arch requires more elbow grease than Ubuntu. NixOS require

I'd say Nix is 95% wonderful, 5% very painful. If you're trying to do something with Nix and it works, neat. If you're trying to do something and can't get it to work, you'll have a very difficult time. (It demands

This is what's appealing with the complex layouts with < 50 keys. It's satisfying to be able to drive a system with hands sticking close to home row, and rarely straying from the same column.

Similarly, typing with keyboards where the thumb gets access to more than just the spacebar is another boon. (It's nice to be able to use the thumbs for space, backspace, enter, escape, tab).

I think any single feature isn't too difficult to replace with go's stdlib stuff. e.g. to read a flag, or read in a config file. Viper has sophisticated functionality such that it might read a config file from one of several paths

If your main concern about DIY keyboards is experience, most DIY split keyboards only require through-hole soldering, which is easily doable even with a cheap soldering iron. The Sofle keyboard is a popular split keyboard. https:/

You could look at hand-wiring a keyboard. e.g. QMK have a handwiring guide https://docs.qmk.fm/#/hand_wire Or, for a circuit board, it's probably easiest to find an open source design of a PCB, and figure out how

One rabbit-hole within the mechanical keyboard hobby is more niche layouts. e.g. you can get keyboards where the keys have a symmetrical layout, rather than the standard row stagger. And layouts which allow the thumb to press more keys than

I'd hope for a thicker laptop frame, then. I think a frame thick enough for PCB + Chocs would then allow both a premium mechanical keyboard in a standard shape, as well as allowing for swapping this out for whatever more niche arrangem

I meant more in terms of user/developer experience. I imagine there's some use case where AWK will be able to come up with output that csvkit can't. But for simple cases, csvkit's invocation is easier to remember.
