I do music and audio in Hollywood, and yup, the Mac Pro will never die here. Which is funny, because this machine isn't exactly for us, either -- a Xeon is often less favorable than an i7 or i9 in our world.

Thank you for this. I don’t think OP realizes the immense luck involved in being a person who is naturally interested in (and also has access to) computers from a young age in the current era. The trick is picking the right thing to be inte

Of course there are. You can’t chain a brain without doing so physically. The comment you’re replying to is positing the cause of said changes.

Gotcha, thanks for that. I wasn't sure if you were coming from the place of a musician who's super deep into it, or a novice or non-musician who just can't really grok notation because that just isn't their world. Obviou

Thanks for pointing that out -- that's such a cleaner way of presenting the argument I was trying to make. Doh. Yes, when I was learning standards, I learned them by harmonic analysis, not by literally learning them in all 12 keys. If

My experience is mostly in NYC, so I can speak to that. Our experiences sound basically the same, though I can confirm that NYC generally expects a level of proficiency higher than just about anywhere else. Yeah, I am so happy with about

Question, so I better understand where you're coming from: are you a musician, and if so, at what level would you consider yourself?

I think that the problem is you're not learning in order -- like, if you learn functions before variables or data types, you're gonna be confused. Those things you mentioned actually make perfect sense when you arrive at them with

I'm not "limiting the entire grand sphere of music." OP brought up improvising over standards, which brings to mind the bop/post-bop/"straight-ahead" jazz world, does it not? It definitely doesn't bri

Let's be honest, here: vocal jazz is a small subset of jazz. It operates by different rules, because as another poster implied, not all vocalists are the same. One vocalist simply might not be physically able to sing a certain tune in

I see what you're saying -- my language can definitely be interpreted as asshole-ish. Tone is obviously hard to interpret when speaking in text, but my intention is to just clear things up gently but firmly -- I should do better with t

It's really not a mess. It's a solution to a problem, and it works well. To give you an idea of how not-a-problem it is, many composers (myself included) prefer to read orchestral scores (so, a page will have roughly 15-20 staves)

Yeah, that's a pretty confusing way of saying that, regardless of the key, the Alto reads a major 6th above concert.

Jazz musician here. This practice is absolutely standard. You are way off base. If you can't transpose on the fly, you're not a good jazz musician. Period. If you can't play equally well in all keys, you're not a good

Weirdly enough, I prefer the same (as a freelancer). 6 or 7 days a week with gently sloping down hours each day (long Monday, shorter Tuesday, even shorter Wednesday, etc) feels awesome. I get the hard work out of the way early in the week

One major issue with Electron that I don't see talked about much is backwards compatibility. This release states that because Chrome no longer supports Mac OS 10.9, Electron doesn't either. Resource usage aside, there's far t

If anything, I prefer the opposite. I can't write or be creative when I'm not sober, even if I've had just a little alcohol and am in all other respects sober. But, reviewing your work when inebriated can help you see it as a

It's still partially this way, though. Credits in films are often unreliable or incomplete. Rather than simply being a record of history, credits are political and mingled with money, just like everything else.

Composer here. This is a terrible analogy. Whether or not a composer can/does perform a piece has absolutely nothing to do with authorship -- do we expect a writer to read aloud their novel? A better question to ask is, "If the co
