I would be surprised if Facebook is not working on their own mobile OS. All those amazing designers they acquihired can't be working on plain-looking webview apps.

Yes, we're talking about mobile here. I thought that was obvious, but still made it clear when I said iOS, not OS X.

Do you know why Chrome and Firefox are not on iOS? Because Apple only allows Safari Webkit. V8, Gecko or any other rendering or JS engines are not allowed. Opera Mini is based on Webkit and does any custom processing in the cloud, which is

OT: daeken, great to see you're now working on B2G! I'm going to their hackathon in London this weekend - can't wait to see a B2G device.

It hurts and annoys me to no end that web developers don't take a stronger stand against Apple for its ridiculous policies against allowing browsers. To me, the browser is the single most important piece of software on any computer. People

For web analytics, I find Geckoboard to be the nicest looking. Or you could roll your own using d3.js.

You gain: 1. A better price on an equally specced machine because we buy in bulk. 2. Save time installing and much more importantly testing and making sure everything works out of the box. If you like playing with drivers, then maybe this i

I'm trying to bring this to market, first in the form of Thinkpads, but possibly other models too (including our own in the future). If anyone's interested, please sign up here - http://giniji.com

I don't know how big the opportunity is, but from the interest in my Linux laptop store so far [1], it appears a lot of people do want these machines. Dell's entry into the market is a surprising and welcome change too. It feels a bit weird

This has been one of the top ideas in my list of startup ideas for a while. I feel a bit bummed for not doing it, but I'm glad someone else is doing it. I should really trust my instincts more and just build things I think should exist. Edi

Is there a way to find out how much memory an app like this is using? How does it compare to Safari's memory usage?

It's funny to see when people seem to get personally offended any time someone tries a crazy new idea. To anyone having even a fleeting interest in "entrepreneurship": you don't need any special reason to do it. You don't need to justify it

This is the first personalised news app that seems to work quite well, at least for me. I don't like their web UI too much (the little widgets with scrollbars are too painfully similar to the new unusable Gmail design). But it's still minim

I'm also not clear as to what Canonical's main target audience is, but I think it's great that finally someone has the balls to stand up and take lead. PG once said that design is the limiting edge of open source, which seems true empirical

I had the same reaction as you when I first tried Unity a while ago. But now I've come around to like it. It's actually really forward thinking. Our perception of user interfaces is very much tied to habit - what we're used to. New interfac

I love Disqus. They are one of the few startups building seemingly unsexy but solid fundamental tech. I just hope they have a solid business and don't get bought by BigCo for talent or fear of competition.

Weebly is awesome. I recommend it to every non-techie friend who asks me for help setting up a website. So happy to see them doing well building a solid fundamental technology.

I will be surprised if Apple does not eventually allow programmers to program directly on iOS. I think they restrict it for now because of the limitations of the device. If they don't go that way, then I'm willing to bet on Android or any o

To some extent I feel the opposite is true - local dev might get solved more easily than a good mobile UI. Because of the relatively open nature of Android, we're already seeing things like Android AIDE (as aniruddh mentioned in another com

Ok, here's a simple workaround for now. It doesn't let you put the launcher on the right, but it lets you keep the launcher only on one window (the laptop in your case). Go to System Settings > Displays. The "Launcher placement" is set

Ok I skimmed through the demo bits. They seem to be building a platform to let non-programmers build apps using simple building blocks. That's interesting but I'm mostly interested in proper coding on mobile devices.

Yeah I'm talking about fully native apps. Imagine if you could only write apps for your laptop on a mainframe. That's how writing mobile apps on laptops feels like to me.
