I'm under the impression that video games are always crunching anyway, so maybe the pandemic was just a good excuse to delay and finally get the time they needed.

I'm curious, do you know of any research (or even just anecdotes) showing that speaking practice is bad? I've heard the claim before but never seen any evidence for it. In my own experience, it feels like speaking helps improve my

To me, both sentences make it seem like I really want to render a view, and Mailers are one possible way. Perhaps a more effective edit would just use controllers as an analogy from the beginning instead of focusing on views. > Mailers a

I'm not sure I follow the analogy. I'm guessing the mess represents a messy filesystem/environment. What does the bed represent? A Dockerfile? Dockerfiles are way more transparent than, say, a random server's / dire

Vanilla JS works just as well now, so jQuery is just bloat.

Completely agree. Thinking about it, though, I find myself reaching for music when it feels like my mind wants to wander and not focus on my job. Once the music is on, my mind has an immediate outlet for wandering - it jumps to the music wh

The idea that homeschooling is devoid of social contact is a bit naive I think. Of course different parents have different styles - it is entirely possible to close off your child from social contact. But most homeschoolers I know have thei

I imagine they could (in theory) simplify it to sig(name: String, id: String).returns Integer Losing the block maybe has some undesirable performance implications, but it looks a little nicer without the curly braces.

Definitely just turn off the cop if you don't like it. But let's nitpick a bit. I find it interesting that the arguments made in the article are about the intention of the programmer. Perhaps an explicit nil does signal to me that

I guess there's a sense of "achievement" when you beat a game that's hard and has no difficulty settings. The idea of "beating" the game holds more weight in that case. But when a game has so much more to offer

I agree with many folks here on HN in that `null` and `undefined` have important differences. `undefined` appears when you access an invalid field, while `null` appears when you access a _valid_, but empty field. This information comes in h

I definitely agree. It's quite easy to look at a large codebase and feel like it's way more complex than it needs to be. That line of thinking often leads to rewrites, and in my experience rewrites often lead to newfound understan

For fractional scaling or multiple monitors with different DPIs, I've found Wayland to be much smoother than X11. And with GNOME, I realize this isn't 100% related, but touchpad support is way better on Wayland. Overall Wayland is

This might make me a bit of a freak, but the one thing keeping me from trying out Fish for real is decent vim bindings. I know Fish has vim bindings, but I found the feature support pretty lackluster and the behavior of some keys like &#x27

I think this example only solidifies gp's point. It sounded to me like they were talking about the ability to open up the laptop and actually repair it, which it seems even Microsoft can't do with their own machines. Full replac
