I'm not sure the new design is a good thing because using Emacs is like entering another world. If newbies have the impression that it's just another editor like all the others with fancy websites they will be quickly disappointed

I wouldn't call dependence on cars "absurd" or "insane" as the article puts it. Certainly there's room for improvement. Self-driving cars may reduce underutilization as well as fatalities. Cities could be plann

What made Ubuntu special was making Linux and other free software easier to use. But when it became too easy they started to take away the "free" part by adding intrusive "features". It's was never a given that as a

I don't think it's a tragedy because if it was very popular and easy to use YouTube would likely block it. It's directly competing with their own YouTube Red. Also look at popular Linux distros like Ubuntu. As soon as they re

I think I understand the intent. I was responding to the parent's idea that we should simply not watch movies with questionable content. I agree with that but also am glad this tool exists. I'm not sure under what circumstances it

As soon as I saw this tool I predicted this kind of response. The idea is not just in the parent post but echoed throughout these comments. That is, nothing should be filtered. This is the prevailing sentiment in our culture with regards to

Don't you see the problem here? Few politicians would dare campaign to reduce an established benefit. At what point would reason step in declare the scheme unsustainable? Probably when it's too late and all the productive talent h

I agree that React, Webpack, et al. are great improvements compared to their predecessors. But do I really want to start an app in 2016 knowing that there may be even better tools in 2017? Most likely I would use these but what ails me is t

I agree 100% but what can be done if the schools don't agree? I live in a small city in China and the middle school starts at 7:15am, has a 1 hour lunch break at noon, and ends at 6:30pm. The kids are expected to finish a big pile of h

See Sandi Metz' recent piece, The Wrong Abstraction [1]. I prefer a SQL template approach such as Yesql [2]. The trouble with an ORM like ActiveRecord is a lack of control of when and how the query is performed. 1. http://ww

From someone who loves RSpec along with its metaprogramming and DSLs, I agree that much of "magic" in Rails and its ecosystem is annoying. RSpec gets it right in that it implements an elegant, readable DSL for a specific use case:
