"Which are okay to eat?" implies how much mercury is present, but it seems this question is from an environmental perspective.

I doubt if Amazon competitors collect sales tax that their prices will remain competitive with Amazon.

"It is far better to do two queries (get the set of reviews with their member ids, then get all of the member from this set of ids and merge it at the app level) than do a join." Is this way really faster? We've been moving the opposite dir

Why is JS not "reliable"? Any language can be a JS alternative. Do you mean you want an alternative language that runs natively in browsers?

We have done months of review and optimization. Still many page loads must be backgrounded (mainly reports and admin interfaces). We are dealing with a large amount of data.

I believe it's a combination of application and stack that's the problem. I've been comparing Rails 3 apps to similar apps in other frameworks. Locomotive is a Rails CMS and it was taking ~1 second per page load. Calypso is a CMS in Node.js

We have New Relic installed. MySQL is not the only bottleneck, but it's a big one. Ruby code is another. New Relic can't show us how much Ruby execution time is ActiveRecord and how much is our application code, but we recently upgraded fro

I see a lot of negative comments that lead me to believe that few here have seen the problems with RDBMS's that lead some of us to consider NoSQL alternatives. An application that frequently times out (page loads over 30 seconds) to me is a

I don't know how anyone can stand (pun intended) working at a purely standing desk. You really need a treadmill to make it effective, both for your health and comfort. Standing stationary for long hours is not good for the circulation in yo

I feel the opposite way. I recently bought a Thinkpad T410 with Windows 7. It came with a lot of useless stuff and was impossible to run our Rails app on it (RMagick does not play well with Windows). I first switched to OSX and the driver s

You seem to suggest in all these cases that spending is inherently good. Estate tax = incentive to give away. Inflation = incentive to buy now. I understand this is one of the core concepts of Keynesian economics. But there exists an altern

If deflation is so dangerous I wonder why anyone buys consumer electronics which, despite currency inflation, continue to decline in price due to advances in technology. If we experienced the full effect of deflation, today's iPad would cos

I agree that it's trash but for another reason. It's exactly along the lines of theories like "everyone behaves selfishly", or "evil men rule the world". There is some truth in such theories, but only in a glass-half-empty kind of way. They

How is bitcoin like the gold standard? Bitcoin is backed by what? It's more like a purely speculative currency. It's artificially scarce and worth nothing apart from it's perceived value. At least with gold there are many industrial uses fo

I disagree. Things work better out of the box for me running Ubuntu on a Thinkpad than either Windows or OS X. The Ubuntu Software Center works great and doesn't require agreeing to a 56 page license or handing over credit card details.
