"The S&P 500 usually averages 10% over long timescales." This is a pretty meaningless statement. 6.8% over 10-20 years is certainly a nightmare scenario for most investors and is probably a significant loss against the risk fr

There are entire schools of economic thought about that question. In the classical view, it's your labour power. In the neoclassical view, it's the scarcity of the labour you produce.

The nature of labour and productivity has been understood by classical economists for hundreds of years now. You are not paid in proportion to the excess value you produce, or else you would be an owner of the company.

Recessions are built into the system. They eliminate market inefficiencies and are the culling element in a system designed to efficiently allocate capital. They are small bush fires that cause minor damage but are ultimately healthy for th

I have noticed (anecdotally) an inverse relationship between PhD candidates and self-guided learning. I'm not entirely sure why, perhaps many coasters may get too comfortable at university and mindlessly follow the track. I think for t

At a high enough level it becomes a numbers game. In CFOP you will occasionally skip whole sequences due to a favourable permutation, a lot of high level cubing is just solving enough cubes that you get these rare and extremely fast permuta

Wow this looks cool, I learned CFOP as a teenager and from showing it to people the number of algos (150-200+) is definitely the barrier for entry for most. Solving a cube with 3 algos means most people can probably learn in an hour or two.

I think it makes sense in a world where reading a clock face is common (12 gradations repeating twice is easier to read at a glance than 24 gradations), but in a modern world that is international and the primary timekeeper is a phone, I do

For every complex problem there is a simple, easily explainable and wrong solution. You are flying in the face of decades of empirical economic research, you are performing the epistemological equivalent of saying "and then they'l

Making CO2 is an expensive process and our body does it on an at-need basis. Flooding the air with oxygen will do nothing. My suggestion is something that helped personally, and is something like a psychological trick so your mileage may va

Theoretically we wouldn't save much. Given a home with good insulation it shouldn't take much more energy a few more degrees. Obviously it depends on the outside temperature.

I would highly recommend drawabox.com. I used this system to get from no drawing experience to sufficient. I especially appreciate the focus on learning how to learn how to draw and not just the mechanics of drawing.

It's already an approximation - you do not need to get precise with your division. Also - you should be able to do 72 divided by at least 2,3,4 (and estimate it for others), even by times tables/estimation and not long division.

My point is the bounds of reality and knowledge are their own sort of fence. This isn't a stretch, because this is literally the philosophical point of the argument. What if a high energy particle collision causes a miniature blackhole

But the point of my comparison to Plato's allegory of the cave is that there are situations where you can't know. If we applied Chesterton's fence to situations at the limit of our understanding, say physics, would we be comp

You could easily call this thought experiment Chesterton's Cage. At least that is more honest about the philosophical implications. It's like Plato's allegory of the cave, except the argument is that you should never leave th

I wonder if this roughly encodes front end and back end devs? As someone is regularly doing CUDA work, most things tend to be on Windows or Linux - usually we are cross compiling to both.
