Brave by default collects telemetry data. It is anonymized but any security researcher will tell you that metadata of this nature over time can be more revealing that is claimed. It's right their in their FAQ. Brave's primary cust

Another option that can replace a lot of Google services is getting your own domain. You can get email with that, and install a bunch of applications to replace a lot of the services like photo sharing. Of course the downside is you have to

I think there is also a difference between lock in and just using a service. If your primary email is Gmail, it's hard to switch and it's worse than YouTube. With YouTube, if Google decides to lock you out, you can more easily mov

I use GMX as one of my email providers. The web interface isn't that bad, but I have it set up with IMAP and it works just like anything else. The front page of GMX is a news site. It's more old-school with folders rather than tag

There are many creative commons videos on Youtube, and certainly downloading those is within the intent of that license?

Well, Apple is moving towards increasingly locked down systems. For example, it is very difficult if not impossible to install Linux on the most recent Macbooks. Previously when Apple stopped supporting a Mac, you could install Linux on it.

It was no trouble at all. Everything worked. With Mint 20 I did have to revert the touchpad driver to synaptics (just do sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics), because the new driver does not work very well. The first time I di

I also write for long periods of time, and use a mechanical pencil with softer lead (2B). It doesn't replace a pen when you need a pen, but if you just want to avoid hand strain, this is another option.

The creator of this page sells software. I am highly suspicious that an email newsletter will inevitable have some advertisements in it for that. No way would I provide my email. It should be a blog with an optional newsletter.

I have an old Macbook Pro 2011. It stopped receiving updates from Apple. I actually did try installing the patched Catalina...but it is practically unusable due to system requirements. Installed Linux Mint 18 XFCE a while ago and recently u

No, it works for any pair of numbers, as long as they are not both zero. I am only using the recursive relation of the Fibonacci sequence, not the starting terms.

We are taught in Western and most other societies of today to numb pain. The problem is that we have knowledge of the problems of this world. I think if we allow ourselves to feel the pain of our knowledge and understand our existence throu

You actually don't need eigenvectors for this proof. Sketch: Write x = lim a_n/a_{n-1} where a_n is the nth term of Fibonacci. Replace a_n with a_{n-1} + a_{n-2}, which will give you a quadratic equation in x. Solving this quadrat

Well, it could be a problem if we are aiming for human happiness. If there is natural selection going on here, then it would be pushing the people to actually become less able to think for ourselves in terms of creative solutions. Sort of l

I am a mathematician. I would say the absolute best thing you can do is take the problems you DO know how to solve and write out the solutions, using complete sentences. If you can't explain some part, then you will quickly discover wh

An electric blanket. I have sensitive lungs with asthma and heated air in the winter makes it difficult for me to breath. Also it is much more efficient than heating the whole house if you live alone.

PGP definitely has a problem with verifying identity behind keys, but I think that problem is overblown for a lot of purposes. Most of the emails people send out are to people they already know, and for those it is usually immediately obvio
