What do you mean by people can't use OTR for email in a meaningful way? Almost nobody can use PGP/GnuPG properly and OTR is reasonably easy to use for most people. Isn't this alone a good reason to just tell people to ignore

Hangouts is pretty good. Now it doesn't require you to have Google+ account, and (unlike Whatsapp) you don't _need_ to use a phone number that's tied to a telco, and it handles multiple accounts pretty well.

I'm not trying to be harsh on Asus or anything, but in the Amazon review I linked above, there are many people who were very dissatisfied with how Asus dealt with the defects. So while it's great that you got lucky in this regard,

In addition to Thinkpads, I would recommend Acer C720 which costs around $200 and everything works out of the box because a dedicated developer created distros just for C720. https://www.distroshare.com/distros/get/

Yes, there's even a customized Ubuntu distro just for Acer C720: https://www.distroshare.com/distros/get/14/ It's a great Linux machine. Everything works out of the box.
