I don't know if I really like the idea of no-string-attached basic income. Wouldn't an alternative like a guaranteed public service job that then pays you with basic income be better? At least we'd be making society a better

It looks like it might be different from checking for monetary fraud. It almost seems like it monitors activity on your website to determine any abnormal activity? Maybe it's more along the line of loss prevention positions at a retail

I didn't write that, but my guess is that it was literal. I've seen and personally worked at a company where 2 weeks was not only your vacation time, but also your sick time as well. A government contractor I had worked for gave

I wonder if there's a market for several smaller "social" networks centered around a single focus? I was in college when facebook was expanding through universities. It was great, and the experience and content on facebook mirrored college

What about browser -> save as -> save as type "Website, complete"? Not really a library, and not really something you could do retro-actively to urls already bookmarked without revisiting the pages, but it sort of works. Regarding a

I can help out with this! (Finally a hacker news discussion in my line of expertise!) While you could think of nested subqueries as syntactic sugar, you might also want to think of them as a view you specify on the fly, or a "derived table"

I think what dwild is after is that online identities don't always have a gender attached to them, whether it be intentional or not. If the gender is not apparent, then there's no real way to discriminate is there? This especially goes for

I think github's missing the point. To encourage a group to do open source we provide them with private repositories? I get how this group may feel hesitant to post something in the open source world, but so was I, and I'm a guy. Here's an

How much of it is women being scared away versus women not having an interest or not considering it? I'm not disagreeing that some women are scared away, but I can't fully expect that its the only reason for this gender imbalance. As a

The conference spaces are work places is an interesting angle, but would it hold in her favor? Had she informed pycon sans tweets and blog posts I think it'd be an easy win in her favor, but unfortunately that's not really all she did. Cons

Not really a tip from the RoR side of things, but I do have experience with the Google Chart Tools. Its a decent library, but keep in mind that Google is in control of the source code. I'd personally look for something that uses a library y

That's hard to speculate on. It might not have. But at the same time, I'd like to think that if a service is revolutionary/unique enough, it will gradually get some traction.

It does if you read the whole thing. Here's one reason listed: Why is this hoodie so amazing? First, it’s made of heavyweight cotton. Most other sweatshirts on the market today are made of some kind of blend, usually cotton and polyester.

Is the ability to use custom domains free now? In the past I thought you had to be under one of the paid github plans. Oddly enough, I don't see any mention of this in the github article explaining how to set up a custom domain: https://he

Thanks for the example. I'm curious as to why this discounts a tool meant for performing IO and various web development tasks in general. Has anyone run into a integer math related issue when using node (that was a deal-breaker)?

I've never actually understood why the async thing is so hated. Spend some time in node, and you'll get used to it. A couple weeks ago I was writing a php script, and it actually felt awkward to query a database and then do something "imme

Why the /sigh? Is it because you don't agree that backend development is complex? Or do you feel differently about the front-end being the part that really matters? Personally, I'm impressed by this. It seems to me a compromise between Mete

I agree - the connection string does look ugly and isn't very node-like, but you don't have to write it that often. It's also the standard for connection strings as mentioned by others, so other Windows/Microsoft devs will find it familiar.
