I was thinking more of the web stuff that people do, so may be overstating my case. There are cases where you really need to make things safe - NASA's Apollo rockets and medical equipment to name a few. Also, when I talk about suing enginee

The problem I have with "software engineering" is that it's not real engineering. Sure you might do thinking to create proper requirements, design, build a prototype, build the real thing and iterate, use agile or whatever. But comparing pr

> Why would leaded gas in 1980 cause more problems than leaded gas in 1950? Larger population and rising wages lead to more cars on the roads and hence more pollution?

Not Clinton, but you could make a case that Gore was responsible. There is a lot of noise laughing at him for supposedly saying he created the Internet, but he did co-sponsor an important bill in 1988, and was honored with a Webby Award in

11. Real entrepreneurs ship Guy went on to say that if you have jumped curves, then "Don't worry, be crappy" - it's ok to be a bit crappy in this case. The example he gave was the Apple laser printer as a revolution over the daisy printer.

A question for those who are up to date with their particle physics: how does one know that the neutrinos detected were the ones that they actually sent? Is it based on the direction they were sent from and the amount of neutrinos received?

While this is a big deal for anyone hosting data in Japan, I question why it had to be in Tokyo. The earthquake in March suggest that it might be prudent to have data retention in other areas of the country. While Tokyo is a big city and th

A frowny is a defacto (Western) Internet standard indicating sadness or disappointment. In Japan you could possibly write ;_; You could also look upon it as a relation to Apple's "Sad Mac" that's been around for probably more than 20 years.

While I don't know about Chinese, in Japanese 大 means 'large' and 便 can be read as 'faeces'. So perhaps the name for Debian in Chinese is actually "big poo".

You say McD is more popular in Asia than Subway. Please bear in mind that Asia is larger than just China. The "worse name" you mention here is only relevant to China and has no relevance to the rest of the Asian market.

The zeitgeist of the 80s had a lot of concern about Japan becoming "number 1" - US manufacturing was falling behind and people thought that Japan was top of the world technologically. So while the authors are Japanophiles, they certainly ta

I'm not on Lion, but I use an external keyboard with a 2008 MB and recently it's downright slow. So much that if I type after a long break it doesn't pick up on the keystrokes properly. Is that what you mean by slow?

For reference, when Japan's Fukushima number 1 NPP reactors started going pear-shaped, there was no robot in Japan that they could use to enter the facility. They had to turn to either a US or French robot to enter the reactor.

In Australia, there's a much bigger market for lamb (meat) than there is for mutton. The reason for this is that mutton is supposed to smell a bit funny, and lamb doesn't. In any case, you can get some really tasty lamb dishes down under (e

So you just have to severly emotionally abuse someone and that's terrorism? I guess that means AQ don't have to set the bar so high. Yes this was a combination of criminal acts, but calling it terrorism is nothing short of hyperbole.

You should only double-space if you use a typewriter. If you use a computer to write your text, and especially if it's going online, one space is all you should need to use.
