Superior is subjective. I find the constant hovering and obsequiousness of American service workers disruptive and annoying. I don't mind getting a waiter's attention if I need it.

Could you expand on why? I'll be starting a data-heavy side project and have meant to make an effort with Haskell for a while I always thought that R is fairly unmatched in both breadth and depth for statistical work and general data a

tomc1985: hope you see this - your account has been hellbanned for over two years (about 850 days, with one comment visible 270 days ago - not sure how that happened). Your comments over those years don't seem bad at all - sometimes pe

I was going to snarkily post the "Standards" xkcd - http://xkcd.com/927/ - but then I noticed that the sample chat on your homepage already has it. Nicely played.

I completely agree, and that casts a lot of the rest of the piece into question. I've worked in academia for years and I laughed out loud (and bitterly, I might add) at that.

I never understand this mindset, where OS X having a thriving independent software ecosystem -- something that I would expect HN to support, startups doing well and all that -- is a negative .

I mean absolutely no disrespect by this: if enabling automatic tab completion stymied you a year ago, running FreeBSD (or other operating systems with a similar ethos) as a main install may not be for you just yet. Play with it in a VM with

Why, then you simply get an incredibly negative review, or one with impossible requirements, or some other nebulous reason why your work should not be published in that journal. Source: currently working in academia in a full-time research

His point, one that I strongly agree with, is that the threat of being hellbanned for comments that get downvoted is enough to stifle discussion on HN. Honestly, how often do you see passionate debate in HN comments?

by redacted 12y ago
> Why the downvotes? Who are 'we'? What do you do? Why should I care? Your post contains no useful information, and thus contributes nothing to the discussion. Ergo, downvotes. The only way to work out what you're talkin

When I originally switched to Android a few years ago I definitely had Alien Blue jealousy, but Reddit Sync has come a long way. Now I have Reddit Sync envy on my iPad. Plus, Alien Blue was so dominant that the competition on iOS was quit

It's completely insane. The custom 4.4 Android ROM I use on a beaten up old Galaxy S3 is more stable than iOS 8 on my iPad. If you told me a month ago that Apple's flagship OS would be less stable than a heavily patched AOSP build
