Obviously no one wants this to happen, but I wonder about any possible mitigation strategies. Like creating homes and infrastructure under the ground, or at least covered by lots of insulation, like a Moon base covered with lots of dirt. Of

As far as I can see the only problem is with how the pension systems are structured. A falling birth rate by itself doesn’t really mean that much. In fact there might be benefits for employment, like there was after the black death. But as

This is exactly the kind of thing that I’ve been planning to make for my own personal use. I’ll definitely check it out!

Another reason why children of academics, doctors and other professionals are likely to have a better shot is simply the age at which their parents had them. I don't have any data, but I'm sure there aren't a ton of grad stud

Yep. A lot of people who’ve been hurt by racism in the past, engage in loose pattern matching. If the story is a police officer shot a black person, to many it’s automatically racism, despite whatever the facts are. That said, I’m black btw

If this turns out to have merit, I can imagine all sorts of shady uses for this information. Our faces and biometric info are already out there, and this doesn’t take a fancy ML algorithm to use. However, the other comments seem to indicate

Joe Rogan raises this point a lot, but it’s amazing how hard weed has been fought against compared to alcohol. However we imbibe it seems that doing it socially is better than doing it alone.

Why can’t academics insert some sort of cryptographic proof of ownership or publication date? The ownership could be done with something like Keybase, and as far as dates, that could be as simple as private Git repo that you make public or

Same, but I’m in South Africa now. I was impressed by how cool the banking is. But then, many countries were ahead of the US in that. My fave feature is being able to send cash by SMSing a one time pin.

Ok, not sure why you brought up black people here. I'm black btw, but my grandparents were able to save for retirement quite well, despite whatever racism they faced. Same with my parents. Wisdom > racism.

I am on the side of not using one of these Auth companies, but if you are learning or just want to make a proof of concept fast, it definitely helps to have that taken care of for you.

Exactly. I grew up in LA, and my parents bought a house for 50K in the 70s, but that same house today is ~700K. Just getting the down payment for a house that price would take a long time.

Yet another reason why we have to be very careful about eating seafood. It's at the place now where the sensible thing to do is to avoid it all together.

As with every major man made catastrophe, it could have been avoided, if we cared enough about it. Also, there is never a single solution that will fix everything, but if we got behind half a dozen of the best options, we could probably avo

That really makes you question how much free will we have, if a drug can produce that kind of behavior and affect short term memory. But more fascinating still is what functionality in the brain even enables that.

I toyed around with pixel tracking like this before with PHP and the GD library. You just create an 1x1 white pixel and set the file extension to .png or whatever, and as long as you've configured the server right, it will execute and
