Yeah, my first thought even before reading the article, was "What about seek times?". Maybe it can be improved, but thinking of web apps specifically, I'm not sure what kind of use case you would have for something that is th

It's kind of ironic that both in cosmology and biology we know an incredible amount, but yet we still don't how the universe or life on earth began. Sure, we have educated guesses, but until we can unify QM and GR or produce a cel

And then let me guess, in the end Chevron will get away without having to clean up their mess. The whole story is fucked up on every side.

Well we don’t have the autographs for any holy text past a certain point, so I’m not sure that’s true. But with faith it doesn’t matter.

So basically it is probably easier to create zombie animals that aren't conscious and can't feel pain, than make lab grown meat? Either way, it seems the no brainer option is to eat less (or no) meat.

So, I am a total ML noob. The thing I haven't found a straight answer to is, what is a model. I mean when it is in production? Is it just some random blob that you pipe data into and get data out?

I read somewhere that some nuclear ware strategists considered a 30-40% global fatality rate an acceptable outcome of nuclear war, which lead to the idea of strike first being ok. I hate to think what an advanced AI would do if it thinks th

Well, particularly early Christianity hero-worshipped martyrs, and seeing as how death brought about union with Christ, there is no tradition of prizing life in the body above death.

I love doing things I can do with my daughter, Minecraft, reading series like Wings of Fire, but for myself I think and write about philosophy, and very seldom listen to music while high.

So I only read the abstract, but sounds to me like this study only tested the efficacy in treatment, not prevention. And all of the hub-hub I've heard is around prevention. I wish this paper would have considered that angle too.

I live in South Africa now, with my wife and daughter, and while I could live in less than 1000 usd, it would be in dodgier areas of town. That said for a nice 3 bedroom pay ~700 usd, and food is like 250 per person. So from the sound of th

A staggering sum, but not surprising. I wonder how the last 20 years would have played out if we reacted to 9/11 with humility and soul searching instead of jingoism. I mean, the blowback in the Middle East didn’t come out of nowhere.

I don't think space is the issue. Most people live 200 miles from the coast. If that gets as hot as the inland, people will fan out to find whatever shelter they can. While I hope there are cool materials science breakthroughs that can
