A few months ago there was a great blog post by the Instagram team on their particularly advanced flavor of this for their continuous integration. Highly recommend: https://engineering.instagram.com/posts/49604961056194

Isn't one of the main benefits of something like Firebase or Parse that you don't have to run it? It's nice that Kinto packages the stack together and provides plug-and-play APIs, but there's quite a bit of expertise and

It doesn't seem like Twitter has a hard time monetizing. They have a much harder time growing their user base.

Founders probably aren't able to hire because they can't get enough money from investors to pay market salaries or because their company just plain sucks. Maybe they think that because they've convinced investors that they&#x

There aren't very many large tech companies that publish compensation information in job postings, so I used Uber's job posting. Equity requires belief in any company's valuation. I'm not here to argue about Uber's

I'd agree with these numbers in 2012 or maybe 2013, but engineering comp has gone bonkers in the Bay Area. Uber has published comp for engineers[1] that put them starting at $110K/yr + $410K in equity. Presuming a 4-year cliff tha

This. Talented young engineers should probably never work for early-stage startups. It's unlikely for them to be able to effectively gauge the quality of an employer, they have little leverage to bargain for equity, and it's highl

This is nothing like a Ponzi scheme, which is where new investments are used to pay off old investments, and investors are kept in the dark. Old investors get nothing additional from this kind of deal besides maybe a chance to liquidate a s

You shouldn't be doing read-modify-write cycles in memcached. It's use is as a demand-filled, look-aside cache. Modern open source memcached has slab reallocation that works quite well. It certainly beats a malloc() heap, which wi

To elaborate: twemproxy supports auto_eject_hosts, but the host is removed from the ring until a timeout and it's portion of the keyspace is re-allocated to other machines during this time. There are numerous problems with this, but th

One of the primary reasons we switched to it at Instagram (we were using twemproxy) is that it has much more robust failure handling than twemproxy did, at least at the time. That may have changed. Our experience was that if we lost a singl

One thing that may not have come across in the post is that one of the reasons we moved into VPC first is that Direct Connect is basically just a big dump pipe to AWS without VPC in place. Without VPC, there's no way to advertise route

Are you saying that Amazon would divide up it's own IPv6 address space and provide a subnet for each customer? That's really the only way it would work for our situation. I'm not sold that Amazon would actually have any motiv

Agree in principle, but it's unlikely for Amazon to ever force customers to allocate addresses from their own IPv6 block to begin with. Like many other startups, Instagram started with the bare-minimum setup outside of VPC, and scaled

I know Chipotle uses immersion circulators, but the scale of their use is a far cry from "almost every restaurant." Taco Bell most certainly does not use immersion circulators.

How many reads do you do on that server? 192GB + 8 SSDs is a pretty serious setup. Just the disks themselves should be able to push 500K+ random IOPS.
