For us the difficulty is that with React you need to let React control it's piece of the DOM. We have lots of jQuery UI components. For example, we use Select2. So let's say a dev tries to redo a jQuery heavy form in React. It

Have strict team conventions and being afforded the time to try an enforce them is great. Agreed. It doesn't always end up working like that in my experience though. Frameworks often have a community that provides some convention guida

I agree you can do that but I feel like frameworks are more about teamwork. I can't imagine having a team of 10 with varying levels of JS experience/passion and telling them all to "just write nice simple vanilla JS that we c

As a member of a busy, small team with a Rails app and a jQuery heavy front-end... I agree. We use React in a few places and wanted to simply introduce it slowly and "convert to React where we could". It simply has not worked out

I had to write a JavaScript program on graph paper (with no computer on hand) as a college test. Then the professor would type them out afterwards with you and try to run it. Whenever I hear about this whiteboarding issue I think of that. I

A somewhat crazy guy once told me that he worked on Stuxnet. Obviously I didn't believe him. But he did seem to know quite a bit about it. How weird would it be if he wasn't lying. I mean, somebody had to work on this somewhere.

I think I'm just getting bored of information. I even find myself unexcited to check Reddit, or major news sites, or even this site. My routine used to be to check Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, CBC and CNN, GitHub "explore" an

When you have kids it's nice to own because you know what school district you'll be in and knowing you are unlikely to be forced to move you can provide some stability for them. I never considered that aspect until I got there mys

The very first thing I thought of when I started seeing everything moving to "flat design" was "I wonder how long this will last?" I figured everything would go flat and then designers would bring back skeuomorphic desig

Wow! This could be awesome for QA work. So often our QA team will manage to get our software into some weird state but not be entirely sure how they got there. If they used this they could hit the keyboard-shortcut to save the last 60 secon

Seriously not trying to undermine the reality of this article but something made me think here. I thought it was worth sharing. I keep trying to drink beer out of my coffee travel mug but I find the walking motion really flattens it and mak

I bet it would actually end up stimulating the economy like a war does. Not to say I think this scenario would be good.

I believe it's a little bit of "column A" and a little bit of "column B". On one hand it can feel maddening that a generation (or two) of young IT professionals have seemingly gone full-circle and tried all kinds of

If we don't manage to turn this stuff around then all this tech progress we read about all day won't mean very much. I'm talking about things like VR and new programming languages... Obviously tech that saved the oceans would

Per your bonus comment: Imagine an app where you can fix your own car without any mechanical knowledge. The user simply explains the problem to the app and the app figures it out. In every scenario the app ends up directing you to an actual

Totally. This is the early adopter "Sure I'll blow $100 on this toy along with my new phone" kind of stuff. People that get these kind of things now will show friends. They'll get excited. Those friends will buy into VR

This is one of the only practical uses for everyday non-techie people I've been able to come up with for these phone-based VR systems (like GearVR). It could also apply to college kids living in small dorms and such. I can't see m

I like to imagine the Earth fighting back in some crazy Jumanji way. Plants start growing super fast and breaking apart buildings... stretching out into the sky to suck up the carbon.

One thing to note: when talking to people in-real-life about what they do for a living and how much they earn take everything with a grain of salt. I've had beers with guys that said "dude.. I'm making sick money doing X"

I once rubbed a friend the wrong way when he said "maybe I'll just get out of tech, take a few years of courses and become an electrician or something like that. Make 100k and be happy with that... leave the computer behind."

This is so true. I think about this all the time. I actually believe that this type of scenario will be what makes software better in 10-15 years for industries that currently still run on old tech. Those of us on HN right now may end up in

So, in the context of Hacker News, is it an analogy of how we tend to dive head first into new technologies which some times end up poisoning us? ;}
