Something that really upped my motivation for running is using my cellphone's gps to log data. I coded a small web-app to show a little bit of stats ( http://fitness.marc-seeger.de/category/joggen / http://github.com/rb2k/run-a-log ) as

It would help keeping the index size down (well... distribute it at least) and a lock on a shard will not influence the other shards. I asked a few months back if I could just run several shards on a single machine and keep the locked area

basically what robotadam said ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1579212 ). To clarify: the database lock is actually for the whole process (-> all databases). I had an especially bad experience with it before they introduced the yie

As soon as they feature document level locking (maybe MVCC), I'll happily use it. But locking all databases when a write is occurring is a bit of a downer for large apps that require concurrency.

If sharding and repliaction is a major concern, I'd also take a look at riak or cassandra. Especially as a simple key-value store, they offer more interesting balancing and error recovery features than MongoDB. MongoDB does however have a

I agree, although I think the "bigger picture" is only interesting if the story is too specific and the "examples" part would only be useful if the subject matter was hard to understand. My personal feeling was that the whole text didn't re

Wouldn't it be completely useless to prototype something in python? Both memory and speed would be completely different. For automated testing, redis is easy enough to start and stop. It compiles without dependencies and a simple "make" doe

Isn't every single subreddit cachable? Only the starting page isn't 100%, but I'm sure that many users have the same combination of subreddits (e.g. the default ones). Would be interesting to see if they have certain "user classes". Somet

I didn't say that redis should DROP the other types. I'd just like to be able to have a redis db for data that I'd like to keep around, but don't plan on working with it a lot.

It would be awesome if redis supported a "bigdis" type that one could use to archive things that should still be reachable by key, but don't need any of the fancy datastructures that redis provides.

riak does support automatic sharding and enables you to tune your CAP paramters. Getting nodes in and out of a cluster is way easier with riak. While riak does also support map/reduce, generating something like a couchdb's "views" will prob

Lucandra only uses Cassandra to store its inverted index, I think you still have to manually post your documents to it. Anybody used it before?

I'd be careful to compare the map/reduce in couch with the one in Riak. A lot of the time, map/reduce in CouchDB is used to create something similar to a "view" in SQL. This is an incremental process and is automatically done for adding onl

According to the IRC chan, they're also going to release the lucene based search interface to Riak. In that case, you'd have a fault-tolerant, easily scalable datastore that allows fulltext search (among other things). Can't wait :)
