My Master's degree project was a webcrawler. If you're already reading this, the thesis[0] might be a somewhat entertaining read. I had a bit different constraints (only hitting frontpage, cms/webserver/... fingerprinting, backend has to be

You could just enter the selector in the top right search box in the elements tab. I just noticed that Chrom seems to have updated, it works again: https://skitch.com/marc.seeger/em6tu/hacker-news-add-comment

It's a long shot, but worth a try: I loved using Safari's inspector for for trying out CSS selectors. It seems that both for Chrome and Safari, only searching for xpath seems to still work. Am I missing something or did that really get remo

Interestingly, if you sign up using a US Apple ID, there doesn't seem to be any additional Geo-IP filtering in place currently. I was able to watch an episode from Germany without a VPN/DNS solution.

Inflation and the art market? If a painting was valued 1 million dollars 100 years ago, it would probably be worth a bit more in pure numbers today. (I'm really just guessing here)

Your diet sounds like a lot of the 'low carb' ones. I personally try to eat a paleo/keto-ish diet which mainly consists of eggs, meat, veggies and a bit of fruit and nuts. In general anything that doesn't contain sugars or things that get m

I have it in the back of my head that there is a way for the site to get a small percentage of the revenue if they 'properly' integrate it. At least I think Instacast, the iOS podcasting client, used that feature.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that. I just wanted to point out that trying to fix this bug 'up front' might be a timesink. I think for conferences, you should try to optimize the 'details' once you're at a point that your product could 'ship'

I really hope it's not premature optimization. I'd rather see a good speaker lineup as a first priority and a diverse lineup coming second. I really don't care WHO presents, as long as the talk is good. I'd really hate to have to sit thro

As far as I see the only line with selectors is: > return [ $($('h2 a')[0]).attr('title'), $($('h2 a')[1]).attr('title') ]; which are 2 css selectors and picking an element. That is pretty much covered by all of the available http parse

When you say 'rely on jQuery', I think it would be more precise to say that it relies on CSS selectors. Most libraries will actually provide you a way to access an HTML parse tree in that way. I guess phantomjs is a good a tool as any, but

1. Click 'top rated' 2. Click first movie 3. "iTunes link not found. Netflix Instant not found." yeah... I think that's where we have the problem :( p.s. also: nobody outside the US will be able to use this. As opposed to the competitor :(

Something that also happens often is that Linux has problems sending the hard drive to sleep properly and you end up with a "I'll stop and start it 3 times a minute" scenario which is able to wreck a HDD pretty quickly compared to normal us

Seeing as you build your own 'filesystem' on top of a simple key/value interface, I think advancing the backend support might be good 'low hanging fruit'. It doesn't even have to be something as 'cloudy' as rackspace, support for something
