I think over here the really crazy ones (e.g. the ones that soil themselves in public) are usually in psychiatric care/detoxing. I'm quite happy to pay a tiny bit more taxes for a pee-less subway ride :) The few times I was in NY,

I have lived in Boston for a 7-8 months and I did notice quite a few homeless people. I always assumed that the american social system is just a bit too demeaning for people to actually use it. (e.g. having to present food stamps and thus s

As somebody from Germany, it's slightly entertaining to see that most comments in this thread have something to do with homeless people seeking shelter on public transport. I can see how this would be an implementational detail, but I

It's fixed by now, but everything on http://www.rethinkdb.com/docs/guides/drivers/ was wrong. The old driver e.g. took several arguments, the 1.6 one takes a hash. The old version basically looked exactl

Just playing around a bit, even with soft durability, insertion speeds seem to be pretty slow (<100 inserts/s from ruby using bulk inserts on a i7 Macbook Pro with an SSD). Also: All the ruby driver doc seems wrong. 1.6 changed a lo

I like HTTP APIs that use basic auth over SSL. Why? Because as the blogpost demonstrates nicely, curl is a wonderful tool to test, demo and debug things. As soon as you introduce e.g. MACs to the mix, you can forget about most unix-y comman

The planet money podcast recently talked about this. One of the reasons: If you're "poor" and you spend 90% of your income on goods, you're getting taxed on 90% of your income. If you're "rich", you spend 10% of your income on goods and jus
