When a company like Apple says that only their app store can run on iPhones, HN crowd usually sides with Apple, with the justification that "It is a free market. People can buy another phone if they don't like it." Why doesn&

I am not an expert. My understanding - (1) The quantity of rocks that would be needed to explain such a gigantic gap in mass is bound to be observed - if they are dark, then at least we should be able to see them when they block light. You

Don't all of human achievements also come from this inability? The curiosity to find what's out there, and to explore the environment? I think this quote needs a lot of context to be useful - it makes sense to balance seeking sti

Yeah, makes sense. It would be hard to gain initial traction and the business model can be tricky. But the merchants also of course get value from the affiliates, so once it catches on with affiliates, they could demand merchants to use thi

How is there no better way to track conversions in a standard way by a third party? This whole win relies on the fact that the affiliate manager let out the real policy. She could have just said that there were no conversions, and the autho

Must have been around 1997. My dad was in his 40s then and had never programmed or learned coding, but is a tinkerer at heart and used to love to make small IC devices after his day job (which was not related to technology at all). He learn

Not sure what you mean by "managed platform". Java being written in C doesn't mean you need to know C to run Java. You hardly deal with any native code at all unless you write your own JNI interface or do some obscure tuning,

What baggage is specific to Java? You'd want some experts for the language your critical services are written in, regardless of it being java or C or Rust or whatever. Likewise, a java shop wouldn't want to use a critical service

This is a very successful marketing gimmick. Mattress industry in the US is a scam. Yes, you should invest in a good mattress. But a good mattress doesn't need to cost $8000. Just get a simple, relatively firm mattress. Mine is a simpl

What is not a political act these days? If youtube bans spam content, that involves some subjectiveness. Would you say banning spam is political? How about if Youtube's algorithms downrank this kind of content instead of outright ban?

I think it's more like ~100k USD in Bangalore vs ~250k USD in the US if you include stocks. (Checking typical L4 Google salary in Mountain View vs India in levels.fyi) Companies do prefer to have most of the development done in the US

Is it an old proverb? Never heard of any culture that considered human beings to be made of stars. It is fascinating because now we know that we literally are made of stars.

I am not sure if you can easily give away that much money. If it were easy, people would already be doing it. Buying a nice home is a distant dream even for many software engineers in the bay area for example, and future education and healt

I think thinking in terms of percentage of income doesn't work, because the lower your income, the lower a percentage you can afford to give away. I have found it better to think of it as a percentage of your non-essential expenses. e.

You should give JavaFX a shot. It's not considered cool here, but does the job well IMO. I have built desktop apps that work seamlessly between MacOS, Windows and Linux using JavaFX with minimal pain. I was already quite familiar with
