I think a good counterexample to the idea of startup consistency is youtube (or any other) system which extracts money by both playing ads and not playing ads.

I totally agree with this and think it's a valid concern, It difficult to get the best of both worlds here within the confines of the unix process model. The query style compiler isn't by necessity a single process. You could imag

What build systems get wrong from a purity perspective is that the compiler has hidden inputs and outputs from the build systems perspective. You cannot infer from the inputs and outputs the DAG shape. And so you must construct an artificia

I didn't do a good job of explaining it, the thing is that if your compiler is truly pure, your source input is a node in a graph, the compiler is an edge, and the output is another node. Given 2 languages with pure compilers the enti

The assertion "all compilers were pure functions", is a strange one, because it is almost entirely backwards. the purity of compilers was abandoned almost immediately (when they started creating a file a.out and writing to that in

Hit the max nesting depth, but to reply about why, because winrt::import! is reading (arbitrary?) filesystem paths and there isn't an equivalent for build.rs emitting 'rerun-if-changed'. So, neither cargo nor the compiler rea

There is also a bit of weirdness here in that they aren't really the same thing, For example see this persistent union-find which is not immutable, but ensures its side-effects are safely hidden. https://www.lri.fr/~fi

Note that this appears to require installation of xcode, I recommend reading its license terms which require being run on apple hardware. Only very old versions of the SDK lack those license terms.
