Changed original comment based on 1. Upvoted your comment too. Still disagree on rest. People will figure out. Also not going to comment on HN ever. All this flame about beliefs isn't worth the time. Twitter is religion :) Thou shalt not t

I'm posting this only cause you asked, not to start flame war. Like I said don't want to convince you to my opinion (and it would be impossible). ...convince me that Twitter is more useful than harmful (especially to your time and self-asse

Neither sarcasm, nor direct statement. Just a way to stop argument that would lead us both nowhere. We have different beliefs. I'm not planning of convincing you to my point-of-view (it would pretty much be impossible and also useless for m

So how being corrected for writing what you doing is useful to you? Or feeling of being more connected - is that useful? Or repeating your FaceBook status - is that useful? Or spreading links, which you admit to be not working because of no

Can't be very sure, but I think they aren't going out of business. They are very big in Russia (I have a few VPSes with them, the numbers are sequential and my IDs are around 20 000).

I also think often that it would be much greater to be working standing. Anyone tried?

Not really an option for US citizens to use Russian version, I think, since all of panels will be in Russian and also you would have to pay in roubles :) /Also you do have to sign a contract in Russian with them and send it back to far east

Firstvds.ru (they have US branch at minivds.com). VPSes are never "shared", but they are on "shared" server. I.e. you have root access to your own VPS as root, nobody has access to it (1), but there are many VPSes on one physical server. (1

Kudos for bringing it up. Now we have a conspiracy to find the elusive poor guy with a cellphone. Maybe next decade we'll develop a cryptomobilanthropology hunting for the unbelieveable miracle of elusive poor guy talking on a cell phone hi

Are you sure you REQUIRE a cloud? Phrase "Amazon is too expensive" suggests that it might be not the solution you're looking for. Maybe you could be a little more clear on what you need, because it's hard to imagine what are your requiremen

My friend told me the other day he was in a bus, and there he saw a very poor immigrant who was talking on his cell whole trip. I thought this was weird and unusual, but he told me he saw similar thing lots of times. Many of my friends who

Actually I'm really tired of that Google's attempts. The other day I tried to find a something like a .txt file containing all the verbs. I tired searching for "finding resting searching" without quotes, Google kept giving me "find rest sea

Also it's sometimes used as porn-bait (i.e. enter captcha to enter the "free" site). Human solving is pretty cheap too. I've heard quotes about $2 for 1000 captchas. I guess with 1 click instead of 5-7 letters + enter - it's going to be cen

Does it even worth researching? To simplify - provider (let's say Amazon) spends A dollars to build and support data center and makes B dollars profit. It charges you A+B. DIY cost is very close to A (if you're talking datacenter scale). A+

This is probably the 4th place I see this. This seems like a comic of IE being bullied for some farfetched reason by S/FF just to start a fight. I'm guessing I've got it wrong, so... Could somebody explain what exactly is this about?

BTW, if you turn off phishing protection - that lowers HDD usage significantly. (But, reasonably enough, by "turning off phishing protection" you have be more attentive to what you're doing online)

The lib seems impressive. Anything which Python's bindings can do 65K inserts in 110ms deserves a lot of attention!! Now I just have to attempt to make it's Python bindings compile under Windows :( It's hacking time! Thanks for the tip!

No, actually this is the first time I hear about it. Thanks for a pointer - I'll look into that. Although the LGPL license seems like a downer - if I understand it correctly it means that either I should distribute my software as open sourc

Many good points! I agree on most part. However, from what I've seen - even while you do a transaction, SQLite seems to write a "journal" file (which is still I/O and still slow). I'm also not saying mySQL should be used for app file format

The most popular is BerkeleyDB and it's license isn't very friendly for commercial apps. Rest of what I tested are really slow. Also, most of DBM-style databases suffer from same flaws as disk-based SQLite - they don't use memory cache. I p

I don't really work with SQLite too much (I mainly work with mySQL and in-memory-structures, like hashes), but here are a few observations that kept me from using it: 1. It uses a lot of IO unnecessarily. (Actually, necessarily, due to thei
