Here's the official response: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1443143 The exploit only involved a limited set of users and was fixed within hours of discovery.

I hear you on the email cleanup thing. We've put some measures in place to clean up markup, but there's much more to do here. If you have more feedback, I'd love to hear it -- my email is garry@posterous.com We're a work in progress like an

I'm a hacker, just like all of you. It's hard for me to avoid having an emotional response over something I've poured my soul into. Mea culpa. Edw, you're right. Pclark, thanks for the feedback.

Actually on day one every single theme that we launched, I designed. We gradually added the best themes that we liked the most, some of them were Tumblr themes, and others were created by Posterous users, e.g. http://corywatilo.com

I have a major bone to pick with your characterization of Posterous themes. I hardly think the theme community is unhappy about suddenly being able to use their themes on millions of other blogs that aren't Tumblr. Also, the themes that we

You stack meetings so that you can get your fundraising done fast. If you're doing it right, you'll get enough people ready to go that you'll be done in a few weeks of hardcore meetings. Then you go back to product. This is win-win for you

Um, not anymore actually. And also it only worked because Dustin had no SPF records -- again vast majority of users were unaffected.

Actually that's not going to work. This sort of approach would definitely hit our spoof filters.

We hear you. Listen, security is a super important piece of our product. And we wake up in the morning and go to sleep at night thinking about product.

We do kill it and we're building a comprehensive spam killing system too. SEO spam is not welcome on Posterous in the least.

We do use SPF. It was related to the bug that caused this. It's been fixed now.

That's a good idea. What I want is some end-user-friendly PGP-like solution. If it existed in a form that we knew millions of users already were used to using, or that we could roll out -- we would do it in a heartbeat. Have to think about

SPF is already baked in. You can't set up an email account without understanding the ins and outs of that stuff. It is one part of an arsenal.

That's the thing -- it's not an "easy" loophole. Like any arms race, every website is in competition with its foils -- scammers, phishers, spammers and their ilk. I disagree that it's not possible to stay ahead of them. That's our job.

Appreciate the concern, and we hear you. We're still investigating this particular case. Normally we'll catch these types of spoofed emails. What we need to do is refine our system. To be honest, we haven't had many complaints about spam em

This is the kind of lack of civility I'd like to see less of on Hacker News. Pointing out someone is wrong is probably enough. It feels good to shout bullshit at someone, but lowers the level of discourse and also makes it more acceptable f

Subtle jab at Sequoia -- on the one hand, yes, macro trends went against Zappos heavily. On the other hand, the board didn't have faith in Tony's groundbreaking worldview. You can tell through the heavily filtered language that Tony went th

Keep in mind that there are 400+ YC founders out there now, and we roll deep. A lot of us do keep tabs on Hacker News and we do vote up and support our friends. So no juice needed. Just regular voting.
