The spike itself? Announcing our funding on Techcrunch and the ensuing blog storm. ;-) EDIT: We also did launch group blogs and multiple blogs per account. That helped quite a bit, (fallentimes jogged my memory below) since we did see peopl

Thanks for the support from everyone on Hacker News! 1) Release something fast. Don't wait til it's perfect. Wait til it does one quanta of usefulness, and release. 2) Work on it tirelessly. Every day, all day. Well, take breaks, but you kn

For instance, legal language HAS to be imprecise, otherwise no lawyer would ever agree to anything ever. So much negotiation every day goes into the subtle imprecision of clauses in contracts. That's why there are courts -- to navigate the

It's interesting that "Ivy" has come up multiple times in this discussion, because I guess Ivy is synonymous with prestige. And I'd say prestige helps a little but not much if tokenadult's goal is to start a software startup after college.

Top credentials are useful for raising money. But it only helps a little on that front. It's a stamp on the forehead that helps some angels and some VC's feel a little better about investing in people who have never started something before

It's not the populist thing to say, but I'll say it anyway. The top colleges are a great place to be because of the friends you'll make and the level of competition at those places. You can meet amazing people anywhere, but generally speaki

Hilarious comment, but seriously: after 4 or 5 clicks, I just didn't feel like clicking on anything else. I didn't see anything interesting until a small little list of a few interesting existing itineraries. It's trying to be too many thin

Thank you for the mention, Paul. We really appreciate it. I think the main reason why we'd like to be able to add Posterous through the FF main page is the fact that people don't understand RSS, especially our users who are brand new to blo

While I love this conceptually, cooliris.com hasn't had very rich support for varying types of RSS feeds. For instance, they fail to support basic MediaRSS constructs like groups, even though I pass it perfectly reasonable / compliant Media

I guess we knew this day would come. I'm surprised they didn't just decide to sell it back. Perhaps Derek would want to keep running it? They were pioneers in identifying the Flickr/dSLR aesthetic, and there remains a void there in the comi

The quote about the 30 results sounds tenuous at best. Did the user search 20% less often because of an imperceptible page load time, or because they became overwhelmed with the number of search results and decided to quit? User experience

Textmate is absolutely essential for Ruby on Rails / Ruby development. What I realize now is that it's a scriptable text editor that integrates super well with everything you want to do with Rails. Basically anything you'd like to do with R

Congrats to our friends at BackType, Dropbox and Co2stats! YC has really been making an impact on the tech startup scene and it's great to see that being recognized here. Vote Posterous for Best Mobile Startup. =)

This is a great explanation of why it's hard to find a job as a hybrid jack of all trades. Founders/owners don't really want hybrids because they're harder to manage, and often have a harder time proving to the world that they're better t

YC startups in general are more well suited for angel rounds than Series A. Angel rounds usually mean less dilution and a ton more flexibility. For us, we're getting a lot more valuable advice, connections and help from real engineers/entre

Keep in mind that a team of hybrid code/business people would destroy a team of pure coders and pure business people any day. It's fine to specialize, but a startup requires all of those skills collected in as few people as possible so that
