I think this is related closely to another popular question: how do you determine that someone else has command of a particular language? I think the point that I would pick is when you start feeling constrained by it. If you start wantin

Well, what about not being reliant on docs for syntax, but only for library functions? I can never remember what each language calls "length" (length? size? Is it the same for strings and arrays? What about number of keys in a map?) but I d

I am not sure I agree with that. It's entirely possible to make a Rails app that solves your problems without having a command of Ruby. I guess you could consider "Rails" a separate language from Ruby...

I remember reading an interview with one of the authors of Rogue where he said that one of the big motivations for them was designing a game that they could play. Most games at the time were interactive fiction, where if you know the soluti

Yeah. I very much agree. So, the logical next question is, how would we use the same technique to teach kids better lessons? * Resources should go to whoever can make the coolest things with them. * Groups lead to compromises, great a

They may not move just to save on gas, but if they're moving anyway for other reasons, you can bet that gas prices will be a factor in where.

It sounds like most of the teachers' problems centered around the Legos being a zero-sum thing, where if I use all the cool pieces, then you can't. I wonder if they would be as bothered by the inner-circle thing if the students were program

In case #1, were you better off before this change? It is possible to become not-a-dependent through paperwork-fu, also, in which case a student would qualify if they make under $100k (likely).

I kind of pity Microsoft here. Is it actually possible to make money writing development tools any more? I use a lot of them and don't pay anything, because whenever I want something that costs money, there's a free version that's better. A

There's probably some minimum that you need, like maybe multiplication up to 10x10, and squares up to 20 or 30. I like the idea (though not the name) of mental math. I think that if all you teach someone is multiplication tables and long di

I do long multiplication all the time... In the Emacs "multiplication puzzle" mode.

I can see what the textbook authors intended here, I think. There's not a whole lot of point to memorizing multiplication tables, it's much more useful to be able to work out arithmetic in your head. The way described here (going to multipl

Aren't tons of little specialized search engines the problem Google was made to fix?
