For twins specifically, have them checked for congenital muscular torticollis. Ours suffered from that and we only caught it due to an observant mother at a playground. It’s easily correctable if caught young. Raised three kids, each had a

Yeah, they should have been tables. Even better, just one table for all locations, to encourage comparisons. Because each area currently shows different statistics, the article could be giving a distorted view, by showing just the most nega

Blame music publishers. They are the ones raising prices and paying artists pennies. Spotify has no power to change this. Spotify is/was spending heavily on podcasts to try to create a new revenue stream with better economics.

Google Play Music was designed in a pre-streaming world, when albums were much more popular. Unfortunately, very few people use streaming services to listen to albums. It is something of a self-fulfilling prophecy, but given the minuscule u

I think the trend started with iPhone. Probably due to a combination of skeuomorphic design and needing a control that was easier to activate using touch. See this page for Apple’s guidance on when to use toggle vs checkbox: https:/&#

I don’t think C++ and inheritance based OOP inherently doomed Pink. BeOS was also C++/OOP, and NextStep/macOS’s use of ObjectiveC/OOP is very similar to C++/OOP, since pre-ARC Objective C is similar to C++ with a slightl

Linus Torvalds recently explained a deeper reason why stack architectures are unsuccessful/unpopular: they do not handle messy control flow well: https://www.realworldtech.com/forum/?threadid=207836&curpost...

That is a cool toy. The 70s had some great toys. But IMO the coolest 70s Christmas gifts were video game consoles and early home computers.

I think the author was smarter than that. They used profiling tools to identify the bottlenecks, then used much smaller/faster test cases to fix the bottlenecks.

I’m guessing the organization incentives are against investigating/fixing random crashes. It might be unscheduled, or seen as “test” or “qa” or “ops” work. Try working with management to set up a way to reward the behavior you want to

A labor of love that would benefit from reorganization and editing. It could also use a round of fact checking. Some of the info appears to be based on third-hand speculation.

Moore’s Law and Dennard scaling were in full swing during that era. The thing about exponential growth is that most of the gains come at the end. The Alto cost $100K in 1973, the price for equivalent hardware halved every 18 months. That’s

Given 1970 hardware CPU and RAM costs that doesn’t seem possible. Unless you count something like the telephone, where all the smarts are elsewhere.

Right time, right problem, good management, enormous funds, Bay Area hippie culture, access to Stanford, uninterrupted time, and luck. At PARC they were able to peer 10 years into the future. That was a big deal for 1969-1979. Looking 10 ye

Jeff Dean has responded on the original Reddit thread. Clarified the experiment’s purpose, results, and pointed out that researchers could conduct the experiment at a much lower cost than the OP’s estimate.

There was a strong pro-OpenGL faction at Microsoft. Their goal was to support ports of Unix OpenGl apps to Windows NT. That the resulting OpenGL driver also supported 3D games was mostly an unintended side effect.

It’s the curse of cross platform development. Apple TV has a tiny user base. It’s not economical to do much custom development for it. So streaming apps tend to treat it as another “smart tv”, which means very limited features.
