This is the case with extensions/inheritence in all the OO languages. You are supposed to verify that your extended library works, once you upgrade the base library.

I dont think reddit's stability is as bad as it looks. Just that Reddit's community is pretty vocal on it. IIRC, they have availability in high 90s (may be jedberg can confirm).

No, Its not arbitrary . In the above mentioned scenario, the decision is based on actual data points of the current system, with possible growth projections, and a judgement call from business perspective. Hardly arbitrary.
