Fair. Maybe the definition is that two real numbers are equal iff there is no real number between them. Which is nonintuitive if you're used to things like natural numbers which have successors. But if you teach people this way of thin

Sure, why not? Different notations for different surreal numbers. But it's not actually a good notation; I wouldn't know how to write 1 + 10ε.

There are some weird rules like that for floating point numbers too.

Oh, I figured it out, kind of. [I don't really know what I'm talking about either.] 1.000...0 = 1 1.000...05 = 1 + ε/2 1.000...1 = 1 + ε 0.999...8 = 1 - 2ε 0.999...9 = 1 - ε 0.999...98 = 1 - ε/5 . . .

Well, a limit of a series is just a number and doesn't approach anything either. If the series approaches something, we say the limit exists and is equal to that thing. Anyway, in the surreal numbers you could probably make up a notati

One other aspect of approximated numbers is whether the author wants to emphasize that the number is large or small. "Less than" and "almost" carry different connotations.

It works though! And if you do if (2^3 != 1) puts("two cubed is not one"); if (5^2 != 7) puts("five squared is not seven"); it prints those messages too. The trick is operator precedence.

Hey, I've got one! Use the exponent operator. if (2^3 == 8) puts("two cubed is eight"); if (5^2 == 25) puts("five squared is twenty-five");

I'm impressed how well the huge GOL pattern runs in Golly, but it's not clear where the actual Tetris board is on it. Not many of the metapixels are live at a time so there's a lot of zooming in and out to see what's goi

This is great! Slowing the spread of the virus shouldn't have to mean sacrificing our privacy. And if it becomes widespread enough, we may be able to go in public a bit more, knowing that we'll be alerted if we've come in con

And since Facetime is closed source, a claim is all we'll get. Jami is peer-to-peer and supports end-to-end encryption. Not sure if that counts or if that means it uses full meshing.

So what's a good open source replacement? Jitsi, Jitsi Meet, Linphone, Ekiga, Jami and a bunch of others look okay [1], but it's hard to say how easy they are to use. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparis

Yes, though "slightly expanded" is probably a misnomer too, in maybe a Lebesgue measure sense, since 100% of useful reals are transcendental.

This is cool. It's kind of like the project to algorithmically create prior art of every possible idea in order to weaken patent trolls [1]. Too bad they went with CC0 instead of CC-BY-SA – we could have ended restrictive copyright on
