A court ruling isn't a new law, it's an interpretation of an existing one. But okay, I hadn't heard about AB5 which is from last year. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Assembly_Bill_5_(...

Well, company towns are probably a bad idea too, if for different reasons. But there's probably room for smart cities created by the public sector where no personal data is collected and the goal is livability rather than profit.

The term "dependent contractor" is sometimes used for this idea of a third category. Whether it actually provides workers with the benefits and protections that employees with similar working arrangements are entitled to remains t

I think there's a thought experiment here to demonstrate why the national emergency library was fine. Imagine if, the day they closed their doors for the pandemic, all the libraries figured that access to knowledge is still essential a

> Wealth redistribution does the opposite, take from those that are providing value and give it to those that aren’t. Yeah, that's capitalism. The goal of UBI is to return some of that extracted wealth to the working class.

Yup. This happened to me and after around three months I started working hard on some interesting things. A month and a half later I haven't made money from it yet but it's been better than the somewhat repetitive job I had before

Forever? Surely sooner or later as we run out of resources (and destroy the planet enough) we have to move away from the idea of growth and toward sustainability. These are mutually exclusive goals.

If wealth redistribution is wrong, why are you encouraging us to give our money to the richest person in the world? Wealth is redistributed all the time, and because of an economic system that rewards already being wealthy, most of the redi

Is the importance of having complete control over the software an argument against using free software? Surely the best way to have control over it is to be able to read what it does and make it do what you want.

It's amazing that the 17 instructions at the end to tidy up all the carries, which looks like it has to be done serially, is still faster. But I guess each register's carry bits are independent from the ones that get carries added

It's strange that the weak force violates parity symmetry, and it's also strange that charge–parity symmetry, taken together, is much closer to being conserved but is still violated a little bit.

Yeah, it'd be interesting to see what the last graph (Figure B4) looks like if you start with mostly evil molecules rather than a racemic mixture. Maybe the bias still flips it to all live molecules after some time, but maybe it takes

The inflexibility of trains can be a feature in some cases. People like to live near subway and commuter rail stations partly because they know the route and service level are much less likely to abruptly change on them than a bus route wou
