It takes forever to run a simple patternsearch(), fmincon() if a function gets a bit complicated. Their mcc compiler is even more crappier, it has so many memory leaks that even valgrind gives up and gets freezed. I do not want to run a MAT

I like luculent, it's quite thin and you can stuff lots of texts in a small terminal, very useful if your laptop is small, and underscore is also thick.

not sure about cobol, but most of the serious supercomputing simulations are written in fortran, and in my opinion, lisp is the most beautiful language ever written in computing history.
