I think it's rather common, even nowadays. I'm in computer engineering and not CS, but I've had many exams where I had to write C, C++, Java or Matlab on paper (introductory classes, system programming, OOP...). I've seen this posted before

I'm sure it's quite language- and project-dependent though. Considering xmonad weighs 1200 LOCS, at this speed you could write a full-fledged window manager in a few hours.

Attempting to read s[i] when i is outside the bounds of the array is undefined behaviour, so the compiler is free to ignore this case. See example at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undefined_behavior#Examples_in_... Certain pointer o

I tried Bugmenot before posting, it did not work. I know about copyright. I tend to ignore it when I believe that breaking it would have no negative effect nor consequence. Your sense of morality may vary. Answering my own question, here's

I'm not so sure about the Chinese-style beating. At least use a structured approach; Chinese characters aren't random strokes, they have rules and history, and learning it can help your memory a lot (especially if you're like me - I just ca

I think in the end cheap hardware will still win for a long time. Today's embedded CPUs aren't much more powerful than what was used in the 80's. Floating-point would be a lot of extra logic.

const by default may not be a bad idea, but immutability of structures/objects in C++ sounds like it would be a huge performance hit to me. I've used an image processing library (CIMG) which lets you do things like `img = img1 * 2 + img2 *

Well, if Michelangelo had a business card, I think he'd write "painter" or "artist" on it. There isn't much else to say. What should they be using besides "software engineer"?

Humor is fine, but stuff that sounds childish (4chan memes, fart jokes), or sarcastic tends to get downvoted. IMHO with good reason: sarcasm isn't a good way to make a point. Sarcasm is about making your conversation partner look like a too

I think the point is that you use it "on the go" (as written on the banner), not on the internet. Here in Tokyo you can already pay stuff with the cellphone, although it's not hugely popular (people are used to cash here, not credit cards).

I tend to use threads for simple I/O cases, not as an optimization per se. For example, I have an image processing library thanks to which I can do a simple image.save(), but since I don't want to sit idle for milliseconds until it returns
