I was part of the C++ -> Java revolution, and I'd add the language being much simpler than C++. It felt like a rare, real 80/20 thing where you get 80% of C++'s power for 20% of the complexity.

To someone going into IT or programming at a young age (so, not me), would you recommend them to get into COBOL and mainframes? Will it be a career option for 10+ years?

Also, don't forget the IRS has a quasi-adversarial relationship with you. You're trying to pay as little tax as legally allowed, they want you to pay more. They're not motivated to show you ways to pay less tax.

Let's go farther back. I did/do code editing, not WYSIWYG word processing, and a good DOS editor let you do everything you needed without taking your hands off the keyboard. You could zoom through your code.

Different McDonald's around the world have different menu items. It's not so different as to make up for reveling in the experience, but it would be mildly interesting. You can see a version of this by going to https://

I say this as someone who was a nerd in the '70s, before it was cool, but the problem is, we have a bunch of children that needs to be taught many subjects to be productive citizens, at a level of expertise not seen in history. Their p

If the comment made here "It's just a job, not your identity. Put in your 40 hours then do something else.", then look at a larger company. You'll be less likely to "make a difference", but you'll be less

Telix was my DOS terminal program of choice, and still is when I'm using a retro computer. Lots of features, good zmodem running.

Mainly a matter of "all the cool kids are using Racket for DSLs", more seriously the web sites, documentation, YouTube vids, Q&A's etc. say that one of Racket's specialties is writing DSLs and languages. I've us

I do work in the Salesforce ecosystem, and they really push "citizen developers" and "administrators can write apps with low-code tools" and they push their low-code tool, Flow, as much as they can. I hate the clicky-dr

If it's all remote, how does your employer know where you're really at? I'm waiting for the story where someone's caught claiming to live in SF or NYC for the pay but really lives somewhere rural.

If someone lives to 200, 500, 1000, does their brain "fill up", run out of room for new memories? Do you forget entire decades from earlier, do you stop being able to form new long-term memories? Do you pick up a book and wonder i

Tangential question - is the ability to "code", i.e. develop software, an innate talent or can anyone learn to do it well enough with sufficient training and self-motivated work? Will there be a percentage of incarcerated, or boot

Yes, that's what I appreciate the most with the USB-C on my 2019 MBP. No matter where I am I can plug the charger in on either side nearest to the wall. Of course with the M1 or later ARM chips charging will be less of an issue.

I was 33 years in the industry, as a developer. Some times I considered going into management, and was asked about it, but fairly early on I realized I would hate it and it would hate me.

Why did they adopt Scala in the first place? I remember around 2012-2014 it was the hawtness. My guess is that there are languages that give you much of the power of Scala without the complexity - Kotlin, and modern Java, having caught up.

I've heard the Flash codebase described as a big steaming pile of C++. Perhaps they cared but making a secure Flash was an impossible task. Windows has magnitudes more resources working on it and it still gets exploits all the time.
