I bought one of these, an Indigo, for $100 two weeks ago at the Vintage Computer Festival Southeast. They apparently came with 10GB hard drives but this one had a 20GB in it, big enough with an external firewire drive. It came with OSX 10.

This starts in iOS 15. What if I never upgrade, or wait for others to upgrade, they make outrage and then Apple issues an update that takes the CSAM feature out?

Retired at 55 from software development. I think it helps when your career (slash passion blah blah) is something that you don't need other people to do. I still write programs and help nonprofits with Salesforce work. Software develop

Say what you will about W95 and W98 but I'm still in awe that an OS that handles your basic productivity and gaming needs for the time could run with 4MB or 16 MB of RAM.

I do most of my collecting by being old and not throwing things away. From experience a good vintage computer to have is a 1999-2000 era Pentium III with Windows 98 on it. It's old enough to recognize 5.25" floppies in the bios, b

I, and the company I was at, switched from C++ to Java in the 1990's, and garbage collection was a major productivity boost. Lately it's been Python and JavaScript. Has C++ come up with ways to help with manual memory management,

Java everywhere. I'll stretch the timetable into a little into the early 2000s. At my job, Java did run everywhere, from my Sharp SL-5000 Linux handheld to mainframes. We had applets in the server, and J2ME on phones. Sun was on a roll

The 14.4 and earlier has its own UI issues. I regularly show my podcast queue on my phone and take screencaps so I can rebuild my list when I do something in the UI and lose it.

Ever since reading Time-Life books in the library in the 70s I've wanted to visualize the 4th dimension. Has anyone actually achieved this? And if someone claimed to, how would we verify it?

IANAEE (electrical engineer), but I do some antique radio collecting. When you work with computers, memory chips, all that, your instinct is to be grounded. I read that the opposite is true when working on old radios. When you're groun

That's fine if you're local but I hang out on the vintagecomputing subreddit and about once a week you see a horror story of a collector getting something from ebay and it's delivered essentially destroyed.

If you're thinking of doing something similar, either in a VM or on compatible hardware, I recommend Windows 98. You get FAT32 which gets you larger hard drives, where pre-OSR2 Windows 95 has FAT, where the max hard drive size is 2GB,

I'll give a shoutout to the Microsoft Foundation Classes and Visual C++. That, along with the documentation was a VASTLY better way to write Windows apps than the previous C code and WM message loops.
