Axel Schreiner's book _Object Orientated Programming with ANSI C_ was published in 1994 and OO easily predates that by a good few years in the mainstream. Schreiner is the German translation of Kernighan's books and this one is a nice examp

The main text on the FAQ page is too small. It might be nice to make it a little more friendly in tone too, less like a manual. Suggest the profile image doesn't have to be 50x50; let them upload anything under a certain declared number

Some good ideas. I did start a list of the Feature Request thread, http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18085 , perhaps you could add them under there? Ideally, the whole DB of posts and users would be available in some other format than

Good advice, but it doesn't help when one's coding in a larger system not just written by oneself. Then there's operator overloading; you can't trust anything to be doing what it suggests in an unknown, or large, codebase. Code readabili

Yeah, thanks PB. It's a big improvement and cuts down bandwidth use a lot too. I've peered at the Javascript and most of its obvious even without knowing Javascript :-) Might someone answer a few questions? node.href just returns an empt

Can we have a taller text area before then. There's little visibility of context. I end up using a Firefox extension to hotlink it into vi for more complex posts.

Does that mean you're not going to fix the Location header and the other standards non-compliance?

I don't see why Safari saying it doesn't want to keep the connection open should matter. You turn down Firefox's request anyway and close the connection, don't you?

Never used Safari. I've examined the network packets though and there's some non-standard stuff going on when using Firefox. HTTP/1.0 302 Moved Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2007 15:40:40 GMT Location: item?id=28352 The Location header should have an

Yes, educational as you say. node.href just returns an empty text/html document when fetched. Does this happen synchronously or not? What do browsers do when they're given text/html as the content of an image and what do the specs define

On a related note, http://news.ycombinator.com/news.css returns a MIME type of text/html instead of text/css like it should. This causes warnings to appear in this browser's console.

Paul, originally I heard "do no evil" as the motto, then after a bit it altered into the current "don't be evil". Was it ever the former or was that just Chinese whispers at the time? Personally, I prefer it.

I looked into how it worked and found other things out. Every page refers to /news.css. Since few HTTP headers are returned with /news.css, no caching is performed AFAICS anywhere between my browser and news.yc. So every page access makes

I suspect, like edit , you can only delete relatively new things. Otherwise, users get narked one day and go around and delete all the posts they ever made, to the detriment of the whole.

Many times I expect those people would prefer an email as it doesn't interrupt them and they can deal with it in their own time. There's a balancing act between convenience to the caller and inconvenience to the callee. The free text box i

I'd assumed the email address I entered on my profile was public. It was only on logging out to check just now I realised it wasn't. Perhaps I'm not alone. I've now copied it into the free text as well.

GWA did use to follow all GETs, including those with parameters, and did cause all kinds of grief because of poorly written web sites, so they added the query parameter check to work around it.
