Hi Colin, I referred to tarsnap and said it had a "good pedigree" on JWZ's blog. Yes, I was referring to your background and domain knowledge as FreeBSD Secuirity Officer. http://jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archives/007641.html#comment-...

There was a syndicate at work when the UK lottery started. I persuaded them, well some of them, the rest went along with it without comprehending, that it's better to buy N tickets in one game than one ticket in each of N games. Further,

They hate D&D on the systems you've seen them use. I've seen them use it for many years on an OS called RISC OS, written by Acorn, designers of the ARM chip. There, users loved it. Everything supported it on the desktop. You had `fi

The last element of an array is foo[-1] regardless of it's length. :-) And try implementing a circular buffer using an array of N elements with 1-based indexing and then 0-based. Sorry in advance for the loss of hair due to the former.

Sometimes, pv(1) doesn't help. For example, `tar cf - foo | bzip2 -9v >foo.tar.bz2'. You don't know the size of the data that needs to pass down the pipe. But I sometimes find watching tar(1) open the files to read is handy; `strace

Excellent. Thanks very much. I've made them black and will now set about fixing some of the other poor colour decisions, e.g. the body of the top post of a thread being an unreadable gray which puts me off reading it through no fault of t

True. Although are you aware you can select the text of the URL and, in Firefox 3, drag it up to the tab bar and either drop it on an existing tab, e.g. the current one, or drop it slightly to the right of the right-most tab to create a ne

pg, please re-visit the decision to have the post's text in gray-on-gray. It's awful for long initial posts like this one. No doubt I'm not the only one that selects the text to get it the slightly better yellow-on-black. It makes me les

So a `DateTime = datetime' in the module would let newer code look more conventional?

I think "vi foo" works just fine with vim-tiny. If it didn't, it would be vim-empty.

Don't think it is a dupe; it's the blog post that jeffbarr said he'd put up in response to a comment on that article you linked to that asked for the option to add a surcharge.

Using floats without need adds noise to the code, e.g. the ".0"s in foo = 0.0; bar += 1.0, and makes the reader wonder why floats are being used. "What am I missing?"

Sure, you can pick a job like that. But similarly, the voucher recipients could pick jobs that cripple the plumber financially.

Yes there is, depending on the type of job he's hired for with the vouchers, and whether the voucher covers parts as well.

I don't get it. Is the $50 only against his labour charges? If the customer pays nothing for the parts too, then he can't subsidise the scheme for long enough to start being paid one the coupons run about by his, now loyal, customers.

Separate from the collective mind of Americans is the status of the US Dollar as a "reserve currency", i.e. one that people are happy to hold in times of trouble. If that goes then, given the USA is bankrupt, it'll be in trouble. It's onl

Overall, I like it. Would be nice not to use Flash for multiple file upload though. Some folks just don't have it. Allow an alternative for one file at a time. Or unpack an uploaded .zip?
