It does because of the market. Leather increases the return of a single animal. So meat can be sold cheaper, which again increases the demand. (Lower price -> higher demand)

I think it's still important to find a good balance for the computational cost of the crypto puzzle. Attackers will probably have a lot of computational resources (think of AWS, botnets, GPU computations), while typical users don'

Of course. I just wanted to get an idea of the reasons without going too much into mathematical details. For projects I would just use argon 2 or bcrypt.
