The first statement is untrue: Stallman is also advocating measures to replace obfuscated JavaScript web apps with free versions: "Browser users also need a convenient facility to specify JavaScript code to use instead of the JavaScrip

This is a noble goal. I would like to do this, too. It appears to me, however, to be theoretically impossible to achieve. The code is running on your hardware; there is simply at the moment no known way to give any kind of assurance about r

I use text for documents and grep/find to search them. I do have them on my phone, Terminal IDE is a full git/grep/yada suite for android. Sharing with other geeks is easy, share a repository with them. Sharing with non geeks

This is a nice taxonomy of estimation games, but stopping the games won't address the root problem: Software development is complex enough to be fundamentally unpredictable. The games are just about hedging against people not wanting t

I agree that proactive service calls would be just awful. There is nothing I hate more than being pestered, by anyone. Having said that, it would be really good to have automatic systems that detect problems. This is done by us with technol

If it's a false misrepresentation, that would make it a true representation, no? Regardless, be appalled, I read it and all I heard was an obsolete species of man whining that it sucks to be a dinosaur.

Okay, so those men who will only accept a woman's company if she is subordinate are having a harder time to find a willing partner. What's wrong with that?

This is actually quite decent elevator music. For further development, I believe the randomness is quite clearly audible and would have to become more purposeful, i.e. stochastically deterministic. Perhaps machine learning could be used to

Needing to give kids an iPad raises all sorts of issues: Cost, breakage, internet exposure... I would be very likely to buy a self-contained colored digital etch-a-sketch that logs everything ever drawn on it, which I can later put on my co

Not a bad idea in the last, but I strongly suspect my kids would be more interested in creatively disassembling the iPad than playing with Osmo.

I use "Starting Strength" by Mark Rippetoe. It's 45 minutes of barbell training 3 times a week and lots of dairy products. I've been at it for 2 years and squat 85kg and bench 65kg (3 sets, 5 repetitions). I obviously ha

Fair enough for 1-4. As for 5, it's just plain hard to get solid results when studying humans, which seems to leave plenty of room for outright ignoring evidence.
