silent is a feature most people need on their phones several times a week - i doubt most people chnage their wifi setup many times once configured.

Simple example: pre-iPhone for the vast majority of people if you wanted to put your phone into silent you had to choose the correct "profile" (is it quiet? or is it meeting? what's the difference?). Post iPhone, you flick the hardware swi

I don't know enough about patents, but Jobs was definitely obsessed with the "out of the box" experience and wanted Apple products to be unlike anyone else's products in that regard. I remember having a 12" Powerbook delivered to my Windows

It's not that Apple don't force the HIG. But if you break them you need to have a good reason as your users expect you to follow the HIG.

Actually I'd say the difference is MacOS/OSX/iOS has a culture of ultra-criticism of UI decisions, meaning developers for other platforms don't have the same pressure to produce fantastic interfaces (just read Pierre Igot or Gruber's early

I'm not sure that would work - in my experience, the reason that they are still on IE6 is they have hundreds of seats to upgrade and, more importantly, the entire network has been totally locked down over the years to deal with IE6 issues -

Actually, reading this made me think that Gruber is getting better again. DF used to be great when it was Apple vs Microsoft/OSX vs Windows and not so good now it's Apple vs Google/iOS vs Android. He knows how to write about the former, le

Slightly tangential, but this is my favourite Gruber article (from 2004 - some would say he's been going downhill since then): http://daringfireball.net/2004/06/location_field - "The Location field is the new Command Line". The article i

That's why Apple started the Apple Stores in the first place - all those years ago, Macs used to get the same treatment so they needed somewhere to show them off.

Not strictly a webapp, but I love what Balsamiq did with Mockups - gave copies away to anyone who blogged a review. Great for spreading the word and a fantastic way of legitimate link-building.

The checkout command moves you off the experimental branch and back onto the master branch. The merge command then takes the commits in experimental that aren't in master and puts them into master.

There's an assumption that "content creation == typing". Sketching and making music (Garageband) work very well on the iPad, videos too, to a lesser extent - certainly better than on a traditional laptop.

Just a +1 for Children of Men - I wasn't that taken by the story but the way it was put together was phenomenal with lots of beautifully choreographed long shots.

Hmm - yeah the docs are sort of unclear, if you're not familiar with the convention. :categories_suppliers implies that the table is a join table (a many-to-many join between categories and suppliers) - which is why it has no ID and why it

I'm interested - where did you learn that ActiveRecord does not require IDs? The only case where I can think of where it doesn't require IDs is when building a join table (for a many-to-many relationship). In every other case, you need to s

I don't know about Windows but on the Mac it's not spatial mode (and hasn't been since OS9) - it's just a poor imitation. You can easily have two Finder windows open on the same folder, meaning you lose the immediate recognition that spatia
