Ultimately all RMS's issues come down to "who do you trust?" If you enable all your Google account privacy options - can you be sure that they do what they say they are doing? How do you know that? Can you be sure your info

NeXT didn't have a Finder; the current Finder is a NeXT style file browser and nothing like the Finder on classic MacOS.

Weirdly enough that's how I spend a lot of my time on my iPad Pro - use Mosh to connect to a Linux box and then use tmux and vim to set up tiles and do my work.

I'm genuinely saddened by this. My Time Round is the only smart watch I've found that looks like a real watch (THIN) - they seemed to be the only ones that understood all the functionality in the world means nothing if you've

I generally agree. However I have a Pebble Time Round (awful name) and people are consistently surprised when I mention that it's a smart watch as it does look as good as any other similarly priced watch (noticeably everyone knows what

Given that the browser is fast approaching a full OS layer, does that mean you're effectively running an OS within an OS within an OS (or more so if you're running on virtualisation)?

I'm not a huge free-software advocate but I do broadly agree with rms. But I went to hear him speak a while back and came away feeling more anti-free-software than before hearing him.

Cleaning aside, this is actually a thing. Stores like Primark and H&M basically deal in "disposable fashion" - clothes that are up to the minute style-wise but made (and sold) incredibly cheaply, so you don't mind the fac

"Trains on time" was a reference to your original comment (yes, I know it's not really true)

Do you think the two might be related? One is modular and configurable and ends up in rabbit holes of tangles and the other is monolithic and controlling but keeps the trains running on time?

Just read the Ars review - it looks like the bar is divided into three, with only the middle area fully under app control (the left hand area showing dialogue box controls or escape). It does say that the bar slows down under heavy load th

I've used my iPad as a remote display into OS X (now macOS) and it's painful. The OS would need an interaction overhaul to make it work with touch - the hit targets are all the wrong size and a lot of behaviour relies on hovering

From what I read, the touch bar is a separate system, with its own processor and running watchOS - effectively a remote display - so an app crash shouldn't affect it.

I'm not an iOS developer myself but I don't think you can switch on screen-size support and high-red graphics as an in-app purchase (unless you have every screen defined twice)

They can't really offer an upgrade path though; as I understand it the closest they can do is switch to subscription pricing.

I've used an iOS app called Stamp (paid for) to transfer my stuff to Apple Music. There is a desktop version as well. Apple Music's discovery is awful (although I guess it doesn't know me as well as Spotify does)

On iOS it asks the first time the app wants a particular permission but doesn't ask again. If you want to change your initial choice, you can head to Settings and view/change the grants/revokes by permission or by app.
