They weren't more painful in Rust because of them being implemented poorly or anything. Rust's memory model makes referencing data across scopes difficult. In a GC'd language, your closures can just reference everything willy

If that's the case, it wasn't intentional. My reading of your comment was that you were criticizing DuckDuckGo for not inspiring confidence. I understood the name to be at least one of the reasons. EDIT: Actually, even now, reread

That's a good point. When I first started trying to learn Rust, I also thought that there was some semantic meaning to 'a, since everyone uses that exact same name in all the examples.

This is unbelievably silly. Your parents can't handle a highly-memorable name like "Duck duck go"? It sounds like the childhood game "duck duck goose". You even admit that they couldn't handle Google at first e

To be fair, the process is scary. Depending on your phone, rooting often involves exploiting security flaws because the manufacturers don't want you to have root (reason #1 that makes me want it all the more). I have an old Pixel 2

Rooting your phone does not give root access to all of your apps. Is this why people keep acting like rooting is a security risk? I'm very tired of this message. Google has root to your phone and you don't. You think that puts you

I find that extremely offensive, honestly. I'm not allowed to play a god-damned game that I purchased offline when nothing about the actual game requires network access? That's ridiculous!

I understand, but surely someone with an actual stats background could do a basic calculation on number of recent plane crashes vs. some estimated probability of N people out of 100 on a plane having COVID * the overall mortality rate, etc.

▲

Wouldn't this be a simple case of measuring the probability of needing to evacuate the plane quickly vs. probability of catching covid-19 and dying? Honestly, right now, for an elderly person, the covid risk is probably higher.

Sure, sure. But the point here is that there are JVM languages that have shown that these things can be done well on the JVM.

I thought the rule of thumb was that only live objects matter for GC performance (mark-and-sweep only counts what's alive and just purges everything else). Is that not true in modern era?

That's a whole other can of worms, too. How about reproducibility and transparency? How do I know the math is correct when I don't know what MATLAB/whatever is actually doing under the hood?

It's a vicious cycle, though. The kids learn MS Office (and basically no actual computer savvy skills) and then they become manager some day and buy a shit-ton of Office licenses for a business/department that doesn't need an

It's certainly not an endorsement of checked exceptions. Just an FYI. And, further, PHP is basically just copying every feature they can from Java for the last several years.

I agree with that. I was heavily involved on the other thread someone linked to about Java's checked exceptions. Until that thread, I thought I was the only one who didn't accept that they were a mistake.

Hold on, though. There is plenty to dislike about Java. Everything can be null, interfaces have to be implemented at definition, broken array type variance, no const/mutable at the language level, no value types, etc...

Perhaps. I definitely read it as them saying checked exceptions aren't helpful because you can still handle the errors poorly. But I can see how I might have misinterpreted the intent.

Agreed that the boilerplate of Optional is worth it. That doesn't mean it's actually good . With Java it's just a choice between "bad" and "worse".

I like Kotlin's null most of the time, but I actually prefer Option still because every once in a while I need to nest them. You can nest Option, but not null.

Optional is okay. Of course, you could still be a real jerk and return null instead of Optional<T> and the compiler won't warn me at all and I'll just get an NPE at run time... But it probably won't happen. The problem
