Oh man, this brings back memories. Loved this game, Maelstrom, and the Escape Velocity series of games which augmented this style of gameplay with an open world. So much fun. I pine for games that don’t need half and hour of cutscenes and a

Interesting. I read this book over the summer (and also discovered in the process that my library also has a collection of Lem in Polish too! Too bad I don’t know Polish). I suppose as long as they are focusing on an “atmospheric retelling”

I run a mail server on NetBSD. It’s refreshing to see how little is running on a NetBSD after booting it for the first time. I’ve also been tinkering with NetBSD on Raspberry Pi Zero devices; the built-in support for various add-ons over GP

It’s not that pie can’t be duplicated, it’s that there are real costs to the duplication. And making pies precisely the same is surprisingly hard (pie is my favorite treat and I make them all the time). Not so with software. Duplication and

FWIW, as a regular user of login.gov, from the outside, it looks like a well-designed system. I am able to add strong forms of 2FA (e.g., security keys or biometric authenticators), it requires strong passwords, etc. It also has decent de

I made a much worse mistake once. We wanted to use rsync to snapshot one of our file servers every evening because the tape backups we did took a long time and could only run them weekly. My boss asked me to develop an rsync script. So I sa

I second the green woodworking comment. An axe (and wedges) are a good way to hand-split logs into boards. And easier than doing it with a saw in some cases. Hand tool woodworking really makes you appreciate the multitude of weird old tools

I would love to see a reference to the claim that Wittgenstein regarded Tractatus as a joke. I took an analytic philosophy course as an undergrad that featured Wittgenstein prominently, and that prof certainly did not regard it unseriously.

This is sad. I teach an upper-level undergraduate course on programming language theory, and one major component of the course is reduction proofs. Many students find proof by contradiction (reductio ad absurdum) to be a confusing concept.
