Not as differently as you might think. When I was more junior, I assumed the wage increases would continue as they had been. But they flatten out after 10-15 years of experience, to the point that the salary of someone with 15 years of ex

Author of VisiData here, how did you try to find it (what did you search for)? I'd like to make it easier to find but I'm not sure how.

Great paper, but as a non-acadmic I was disappointed by the last paragraph before the conclusion: > I think it may be our vanity as academics to think that any one but academics and students read academic papers. Therefore, I have chosen

I wish you had done that :) But in actuality I agree, I don't think it would have helped. In today's climate, disagreeing with your 'side' signals that you are on the other 'side' and makes you a bit more of

For me this often happens incrementally. Like they started with "if (FeatureNotDisabled)" and then locally refactored the code until it was "if (!FeatureNotDisabled)". The problem is that they then didn't go back

You can't have a "self" without reference to an "other". When you say to yourself "I am a good programmer", it must be by comparison to all the other not-good programmers. There is a subtle but very impo

I think there's a happy medium. I have a personal target of 4 days/week (or equivalent), and so I don't mind optimizing existing work, and then taking on additional work, as long as it averages out to this healthy balance.

Overall this article has some really good advice. But I have come to realize that a violent stance--"fighting" to "kill" a "toxic ego"--reinforces a separate, negative part of yourself, and it becomes stronger

What if 'enough' is not time-based? What if you just have to make sure that new versions are deployed and the service stays up and isn't being hacked? If you can do that with 2 days/week, more power to you. Or maybe y

Same here. There is a world of difference between 32 hours/week and 40/week. I'm looking forward to being more settled in my current job so I can move back to 4 days/week (and be more productive too).

Many of these people are academics, doing it as their professional work--academics do seem to have that same kind of European giving mentality. Most of the others were paid by a company to do their work. Stallman though I will grant you.

51% of the population are women, who suffer from these gender roles. That's a super big-ticket group right there.

Actually it's because gender is a hot-button topic, and not just political. Some of us think that everyone pays too much attention to gender, and those who think they don't are generally male and don't have to think about

If climate change truly is incompatible with global civilization, I would rather have some defunct coal plants laying around than spent nuclear fuel. Nuclear maybe would have helped us avoid the worst of climate change if we had adopted it

Yes, but how did you come to that conclusion? Lexical matching, piecewise numeric matching? What's the programmatic way of determining that? For a better example, how about version 1.9 vs 1.10? Or 1.9rc1 vs 1.9?
