What a nightmare. This is where software engineering meets "real" engineering, where a "bug" has potentially life threatening consequences.

It was a joke. Your sentence was hard to read because it had 3 negatives in it: > [Not] everything that I [can't] [disprove] should be taken seriously.

If you need to use buildx it is a slog to get right. The split between root and rootless is also wrought with forking guides and very confusing to triage. For example, rootless needs more care with capabilities.

I build web apps without loaders. There’s maybe a brief flash before content loads but it’s less than 1s ttl. People just want to slap loaders in front of everything because they have been duped into believing react-query is the state mgmt

Maybe for public facing sites with minimal interactivity. But at that point just use something more basic. For web apps, client only is the way to go and way simpler to maintain. It’s not even close.

Yea I disagree. You’ll be fighting nextjs the entire time. It’s a tool for e-commerce sites. And honestly at this point you’d be better served with Astro.

If you aren’t deploying to vercel for the duration of the project, use something other than next.js. It has become a vercel only product at this point.

I would argue that unless your need SEO there is no reason to reach for Next.js or any other react framework. The default should be vite and client only. Everything else only serves corporate interests.

Hah, I guess I was descriptive enough to narrow down the town. You're right, of course. This place is filled with high paying, advanced degrees. You could throw a rock in a crowd here and hit 3 physicians.

Nope, 120k population college town. It is a really nice daycare, but nothing insane. We also have to provide the diapers and meals as well. But to be fair, the cost of living is quite high where I live. New build condos are going for $1

Hmm, are you turning both your wages into hourly rates and then comparing? My wife is a physician (me a SWE) and at face value she makes more but after considering hours worked it’s not even close. She is regularly pulling 65-90 hrs/wk

Exactly. A child is a future contributor to the workforce. If outcomes are different then this is an investment. It’s an empirical question, to be sure, but it is theoretically possible the outcomes are different.

I don’t buy the research cited in this article at all. Defining productivity based on employee Q&A seems very error prone, especially when asking them to recollect what they did a week ago. Further, at least anecdotally, there are a ton

Having an API gateway sounds nice, but that’s not how I’ve seen it. Usually the FE has to query and synchronize multiple API endpoints (eg auth, product, billing). In this case microservices really just means "let the front-end handle
