I like the idea of automatically generating a set of test cases, but requiring you to fill out the tests. Even better if I can run my-lang --gen-test-cases input.lang and it outputs stub tests for the edge cases.

Null is great. Null as a valid value for every reference type by default is brain-dead. It is one of my major gripes with modern C#.

As I said, very little that can improve test quality . :) Good to brainstorm though. But in my experience, anything that breaks flow (like those languages that refuse to compile if there's unused code, even if you've just commented somethi

Type systems are a little more than just syntax. Static analysis can identify unreachable sections of code, for instance, which will often indicate a bug. Unit tests cannot prove correctness, only provide a finite set of ways in which the p

My only complaint with that version is that foo() is repeated now. It's not clear at a glance that you're definitely calling foo, and only deciding which argument to pass. (Well, in this simple case it's quite obvious, but...)

And then y'all started talking to each other in plural all the time. (OK, so 'you' was used as a formal singular for a long time too, but I like my version better)

Fair enough. I prefer it to be just me and two or three of my friends, so I haven't hit that issue. I find it just becomes less personal after that (although your experience may vary, of course)

The main point is that when you realise you forgot to set reindeerCount = 0. If closing the workshop is the only situation in which you fire all the reindeer, it's probably fine. If you need to fire the reindeer in other situations, you now

I guess the trick is to be careful about what you compute. Helping your friend compute that infinite loop doesn't help anyone.

Do you have some sort of basis for claiming it's less distracting? I mean, I get that it has a certain visual appeal, and I readily accept your font claim, knowing little about font rendering. But I'm not at all convinced that an Apple lapt

I feel like you and your source misunderstand the phrase. It is worded confusingly, so it's not all that surprising. Perhaps a better wording would be "Information tends to spread". It's really about the arrow of time. It's much easier to g

It has to be infinite for the analogy to work. The restaurants have to pay to replace food the homeless would pick up during the day (or even put in work to prepare it for a restaurant). Food that's leftover at the end of the day and can't

In some cases you're actually helping the owner's chances of selling it to you in the future. Sometimes I pirate something and it's so good that I just have to buy it. Of course, in a lot of cases demos would work well for that, but they se

I'd like to think the "everything is a file" mentality would've been taken a touch farther, and the command line tools would deal with networked resources better (eg cp ssh://example.com/~/somefile ~/localcopy)

You mean to give you a scheme REPL? Because I'm skeptical of the use of transforming SICP into a "tutorial" style. It's the kind of book that you need to read and think about. Having said that, finding a REPL that's compatible with it can t
