Let me guess... they're using OAuth as an authentication protocol, and it's working weirdly 'cause it's an authorization protocol?

In fairness, that sounds like something Sherlock Holmes would very plausibly do. Then again, we all know he's kind of an ass, if a lovable one.

For what it's worth, I've been using SharpDevelop almost full-time at work. Then again, I'm more of a Linux guy working at a .Net shop because "Hey, why not. C# is nice enough"

I somewhat question the effectiveness of ... let's say Reddit as actual communication, though. Maybe I'm projecting, but I find my online social interactions are nice, but don't really compare to actually hanging out with friends, or even t

I agree. That does actually sound like quite an appealing internet, to be honest.

Well, I just set up a few circles when I joined (maybe 7ish), and now whenever I add someone, I quickly tick one or two of the boxes. It's not really high-maintenance.

OpenID is great, but I somehow just don't expect it to get that much adoption on sites where "Sign In With Facebook" is the default. Whereas I have at least some hope that Persona might become that common if Mozilla play their cards right.

Could you explain the rainbow tables comment? I would've thought it'd end up in a dictionary, not a rainbow table. (although I have to admit I've forgotten the details of how rainbow tables work)

I dunno... in the example there, I'd say that it costing 16000x as much to crack the passwords would be a little more than a "roadbump". (assuming people are renting {C,G}PUs in the cloud to perform the attacks)

I'd tend to choose temporary variables. I trust my compiler to optimise them out, and I find it makes it much easier to find the appropriate place to change or add new code. "Does this affect working out whether the error has been logged be

I'm against inconveniencing existing humans for the benefit of the environment, but arguing that trying to reduce human population increase is "hating humans" is like arguing that pro-choicers "hate babies". I mean, sure, let's look out for

Unfortunately I think that ship has sailed. Personally I'm hoping Persona will catch on. At least that's designed as an authentication scheme.

People apparently think that OAuth is Open Authentication not Open Authorization. I think that ship has sailed, unfortunately. Although it still confuses me when I go to log in to a site and I get the pop-up about "Do you want to authorize

I'd like to once again recommend trying the Basic Html view. You can middle-click the compose button (or any link, really) and it opens in a new tab. It's super helpful for keeping multiple emails open to reference while writing a new one (

A commit isn't really "in" a branch in git in the same way as it is in hg. In hg, each commit "belongs" to a branch (I'm remembering correctly here, right?). In git, a "branch" is basically a variable pointing at a specific commit. A commit

Generally blackhat is accepted as the term for anything less legal than greyhat. There's no "lower bound" like "Oh, he broke into a non-profit! That's not consistent with blackhat ethics!" EDIT: To be clear, that doesn't mean that whatever

Have you tried xkcd's mirrorboard[0]? I don't know if you're on Linux; if not I think I've seen ports for other OSes floating around somewhere. It takes a little getting used to but is fairly quick to pickup, and cheap (in money and scripti

Since this seems to be the blog-feedback subthread... I don't have a blog yet, but I've been tinkering with a design for a bit. Feedback is appreciated. I'm aware that many people hate light-on-dark, and I'm trying to find a solution that m

I will second this recommendation. I'm a big surf fanboy. Not only does it force me to focus a bit more, but in my experience it loads pages significantly faster than Chrome or Firefox. Which I wouldn't have thought possible, but there you
