Personally I find www. no less cryptic than http:// . Additionally http:// is hidden in many browsers these days, so you're left with just {,www.}example.com/ and don't need the filler. Regarding "

I see this assumption quite frequently -- That what is easy for a beginner is easy for an expert. I'm not sure that's the case. FWIW, I'm in the anti-boilerplate camp.

Arguably, achieving critical mass is one of the failure modes for forums. :)

I believe that in the original formulation of the Turing Test the judges were asked to hold two conversations: one with a computer and one with a human. Afterwards they chose which of the two they believed to be the human. In that scenario,

There's a difference between throwing out all the rules, and throwing out merely the useless ones: splitting infinitives, ending sentences with prepositions, and such. Having said that, I'm on-the-fence about consistent Oxford Com

For completeness: AltDrag also supports resize, maximise, and always on top. I believe it has minimize as well, but I don't use that shortcut so I'm not sure.

AltDrag is fantastic. It's the first thing I install on any windows computer I'm on. As an added bonus it supports toggling "Always on Top" status of arbitrary windows.

This strikes me as a much bigger and less obvious transformation than the one suggested by the grand-parent (although interesting none-the-less). Specifically, this seems to take semantics into account whereas the suggested representation i

Silly as it sounds... have you tried using smaller plates? I find having a small plate stacked high seems more like a "real meal" than the same amount of food spread thinly on a larger plate. Then again, if you're in Japan, I

As far as I know both Firefox and Chrome link against libnss, not openssl, so they would not be vulnerable to this bug. More generally, it's my understanding that either end of a TLS connection can send a heartbeat request, so clients

I'd just like to point out, though, that in the real world "vim navigation" is not very hjkl-heavy. (Much more w, b, f, t, search, etc). Having said that, go play nethack anyway :)

UTF-8 was hardly "inevitable". We could well have ended up with only UTF-16, or some other variable length encoding that doesn't share the nice properties of UTF-8. Don't get me wrong, UTF-8 is pretty simple, but it'

I always use Z for up/down even though I'm a programmer. For some reason I just find it easier to reason about. In fairness, my first forays into 3D were extending a 2D top-down game with an "altitude".

At the end of the day grammar is convention, and 'singular they' seems like a sensible one. (in part as it's got a long history, in part as I don't know a better alternative)

I worry that it will not be a choice (or at least taboo, like suicide is these days -- given that's basically what it will be). EDIT: I wonder if the possibility of living nearly forever will make society even more risk-averse?
